KoRT’s Oct. 28 Fright Knight should be a delight for kids
Every late October brings out Halloween characters who walk the streets trick or treating, but a new event at West Holmes High School will provide a very safe yet exciting way for youngsters to don their favorite costumes and have a blast trick or treating.
Welcome to Fright Knight, a night of trick or treating filled with all the sweets and treats a kid could want.
The inaugural trick-or-treat event hosted by the West Holmes High School Knights of the Round Table organization will take place Monday, Oct. 28 at West Holmes High School Stadium from 6-7:30 p.m.
The event is open to all West Holmes School District elementary students and younger siblings, who are invited to dress up in their favorite Halloween costume of choice and join the high school athletic teams, clubs and other school organizations, who will line the track with tables filled with loads and loads of sweet treats for the kids.
“We’re excited about this,” said KoRT member and cross country star Lexi Starner. “It’s a safe night for parents and grandparents to bring their children and trick or treat under the stadium lights.”
Teams, clubs and organizations will have tables set up all around the track, where kids can roll through and add to their collection of candy and treats. To add to the Halloween atmosphere for the evening, the athletes and club members will also be dressed up in Halloween costumes, making it a fantastic fright night of fun for all.
In addition to the school teams and clubs, KoRT is inviting any businesses or individuals who would like to donate candy to the effort to do so by dropping off candy to the high school front office during school hours.
“It will be a funway for the community to get involved,” said Adam Brately, West Holmes athletic director.
Lexi Starner said the event is to promote all of the sports teams, clubs, groups like FFA and National Honor Society, Positive Behavior, Interventions and Support group and other high school groups that can make high school life fun and educational.
“One thing we want to stress is that it is going to be the safest place possible to go trick or treating,” Lexi Starner said. “Combined with the light show, it should be a really fun night.”
“We hope that everyone comes and stays for both Fright Knight and the band show because they’re both going to be exciting,” said Zora Starner, another KoRT member and cross country runner.
She said one of the goals of the event is to get all of the local teams and clubs more involved with their community, and inviting everyone in for a fun night of trick or treat brings many people together while making people and especially the elementary kids more aware of all of the possible groups they can join in the future.
Noelle Smith, another cross country member who is part of KoRT, said KoRT’s purpose is to promote unity among school members and neighboring schools, and the push to promote all of the positives of school and working together has been a KoRT staple since its inception.
The Knights of the Round Table continues to be a club focused on building character, developing sportsmanship and building relationships, both within the high school and with students from other schools.
“It’s a great organization that helps us get together with all of the other school leaders in the conference and discuss ideas of how we can develop our leadership roles in the community,” Smith said. “We share these ideas, and at the end of the year, we all get together and have a big presentation to show everything we’ve done. It’s a good way to hold each other accountable and make our schools and communities a better place.”
Zora Starner added that it has also helped athletes throughout each of the school’s different sports find a way to connect and build relationships.
The KoRT members continue to work toward finding new ways to become more involved in school activities and the community.
Following trick or treat, the West Holmes marching band will present its annual Band Light Show from 8-9:30 p.m.
Admission to the band show is only $2 per adult and $1 per student or child, while the trick-or-treat event is free to all. The concession stand will be open throughout the evening.
The trio said the hope is that this will become an annual event that will encourage the community to make a connection with the school’s organizations.
