A chance to spend time among documented paranormal activity is coming up Saturday, May 18 at the Victorian House Museum in Millersburg. A Full Moon: Paranormal Night at the Museum is open to the public with access to the ghostly residents of the house at an unusual level.

“It’s a night to spend with a team of investigators,” said Mark Boley, museum director. “Then you get some free time to see what you can find on your own.”

While the evening is open to anyone who would like to come, the group is capped at 24 participants. At $35 per person, the night is likely to sell out quickly.

Participants are encouraged to bring any equipment they may have. “Electromagnetic detectors, audio-recording devices, whatever they like,” Boley said. “They should definitely bring a camera.”

Guides will be on hand to demonstrate some basic ghost-hunting equipment and tour the house with the group. Afterward, everyone will be free to explore on their own a bit.

The old house is well-known in ghost-hunting circles across the country for the number of sightings and odd occurrences. “Oh, absolutely,” Boley said, “there is a lot of activity in the house. Well-known paranormal teams often come in and spend the night. They usually are able to find something they can detect, though not always. You just never know. Those are more serious evenings when the house is open to investigators. A Full Moon: Paranormal Night at the Museum is more fun and the chance for casual ghost hunters to get greater access on their own.”

The evening will begin at 7 p.m. with an orientation session at Castle Club, next door to the house. A tour of the mansion with guides will follow. Then guests will have 1 1/2 hours to explore the house unaided. A wrap-up gathering at 10:30 p.m. will allow participants to share their stories and ask questions.

The house’s reputation has grown, due to researchers sharing their findings via social media. All that high-tech exploration and fact-finding, often with plenty of odd occurrences and recordings to share, is not what fascinates Boley, however.

“What I think is fascinating are the people who come here to tour an old Victorian house with no preconceived notions about ghosts. They aren’t here for that and probably aren’t aware of the building’s reputation,” Boley said. “The power of suggestion can be pretty strong, but casual groups touring the house report seeing or hearing things all the time. That’s the thing that interests me.”

While the haunted aspect of the museum is not the primary focus of the Holmes County Historical Society, Boley said it represents an interesting niche for the society.

The home is a 28-room structure listed on the National Register of Historic Places and serves as a display space for the historical society’s collections and a reference point for area history. The museum is open through October Tuesday through Sunday from 1-4 p.m.

Preregistration for A Full Moon: Paranormal Night at the Museum is required. The evening is open to adults 18 years or older only. Call the museum at 330-674-0022 or register online via the website at www.holmeshistory.com or via the group Facebook page.
