Every year local high schools create opportunities for young ladies to get decked out and dressed to the nines for their annual high school proms.

While dresses can be expensive, there will be an opportunity for area young women to find a prom dress for a fraction of the cost at the annual Prom Dress Fashion Show on Tuesday, Jan. 29 at H15 Ministries from 6-7 p.m. and a time for people to shop for dresses immediately following.

For those who have never been to the show, it is a full-blown fashion show that features dozens of prom dresses, most of which have been sparingly worn.

The runways at H15 Ministries in Millersburg will be lit, and a dozen area teens will show off a parade of 48 different prom dresses available for purchase. Most of the dresses come from Save & Serve Thrift Shop, which has up until this year been either the sponsor or co-sponsor of the prom dress event.

However, they wanted to do something special for the new H15 Ministries effort to reach out to area teens. Thus they have turned the event over to H15 Ministries in its entirety.

While H15 Ministries director Andy Schafer said he is far more comfortable with a hammer in his hands than he is in picking out prom dresses, it is nonetheless a wonderful gesture by Save & Serve and a golden opportunity for the ministry to raise much needed funds while also providing a unique experience for the models as well as those shopping for a like-new prom dress.

According to Schafer, each dress featured in the show will be available for purchase for a suggested $60 donation.

“It’s a fun event that helps us, and it helps local families in search of a nice prom dress,” Schafer said. “Leading up to the event, we have the girls doing the modeling come in and try on different dresses and pick the ones that suit them the best. Each of our models will showcase four different dresses on the evening of the show. There is a neat sense of excitement for the show because the girls are always a little nervous yet excited about modeling.”

The show will be emceed by Ralph Wilson and Tristan Yoder, and light refreshments will be served.

Schafer said his wife Tammy will help the girls get fitted with their prom dresses. On the morning of the event, they will all travel to Lux in Millersburg, where stylist Angelina Tennefoss will provide each of the girls with a free hair makeover for the event.

“It’s nice because it makes it that much more special for the girls,” Schafer said.

The H15 facility in downtown Millersburg will provide a much longer 60-foot runway for the girls to traverse while showing off their dresses. It also gives the ministry a chance to show off its new digs.

The recently renovated building on East Jackson Street is nearing completion and has undergone a complete transformation over the past two years. Schafer said being able to provide people with an opportunity to see just how far the building has come is truly encouraging.

“We are far enough along that we are going to be able to hold it at H15 even if we aren’t quite ready to open officially yet,” Schafer said. “What is really exciting for us is that once we get the show cleaned up and finish off a few odd jobs, we will be ready to officially open our doors to area teens, and that is really what we are blessed to be able to provide.”

All of the proceeds on the evening will go toward the budget for phase two of the H15 Ministries project.

Whether or not people have high school-age daughters or not, this event is worth coming to support the models and to both support and explore the new H15 Ministries facility. H15 Ministries is located right across from the Holmes County courthouse.
