With Amish Country continuing to become a place where people both close to home and from outside the area want to gather together for meetings, weddings, reunions and any type of event where many people congregate, the need for facilities continues to grow.

Thus, when the Miller family near Holmesville recognized the potential of their home farm becoming a gathering spot, they decided to create a facility that would cater to hosting gatherings.

Thus, Second Creek was born, designed for both private and public events hosted in a secluded setting that has become popular for hosting meetings, weddings and more.

“We’ve only just started posting that this venue is available to rent for all types of gatherings, so we are excited about getting started,” said Lois Geiser, who joined siblings Renita Spurlock, James Miller, Nila Miller, Joe Miller and his wife Kim in creating Second Creek.

Geiser said the family had wanted to do something with the family farm — which is complete with a large barn, a secondary barn, plenty of land and even a ballfield — for a long time. When COVID came and Joe Miller had time to clean out the barn, the ball got rolling.

“It’s such a beautiful property, and it has such a neat, secluded feel to it that people are looking for,” Spurlock said.

The barn, which is lit with strung lighting, is ideal for music concerts, something they hope to host plenty of in the future.

This summer Second Creek is finally kicking off its schedule and opening its doors to those wishing to get together for special occasions.

Kicking off the summer venue will be the June 15 inaugural grand opening of the outdoor market, an event that will take place every third Saturday of the month throughout this summer and fall.

Filled with vendors featuring fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, arts and crafts, home décor, soaps, lotions, jewelry and more, the Miller family is hoping this becomes a fun gathering event for the public.

The event will take place both on the grounds outside and in the Second Creek barn.

“We’re excited about this outdoor market, and we’re looking for vendors to fill out all of our spaces and make this a really exciting and rewarding event for the people,” Spurlock said.

The market will be open June 15, July 20 and Aug. 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and vendors wishing to sign on can call or email Joe Miller at 330-763-4281 or thesecondcreek@gmail.com.

“We think this market can really grow into something special that will be beneficial to both locals and people visiting the area,” Kim Miller said.

The June 15 kickoff also will include an evening of live music featuring local legend John Schmid at 7 p.m. The concert is free and will include a love offering to help Schmid’s ministry. Food and drinks will be available.

On June 21-22, the inaugural Hands of Hope Set Free Rally will take place, featuring music, live testimonies, a family-style dinner, a church service and more.

July 20 will feature a live concert featuring the Jeff Stauffer Band, and Aug. 8-10 the Amish Country Fly-In featuring dozens of paragliders will take place, with the public invited to bring their lawn chairs and blankets.

Sept. 14 will see a live show from Country Line Band along with a truck show.

“Our facility is perfect for these types of music events and shows, and the setting is ideal for weddings and reunions because of the natural beauty,” Geiser said. “We hope that this opens up a new avenue for people to gather together and fellowship.”
