More than 1,100 fourth-grade students from all over Wayne County descended on McGaw Chapel at the College of Wooster on Thursday, March 6, for the annual Wooster Symphony Orchestra Children’s Concert. This concert, which is sponsored by the Women’s Committee for the Wooster Symphony Orchestra and by Marcia Pollock Farabee, honors the memory of the late Dan Parmelee, who founded the WSO in 1915 while serving as a professor of violin at the college. Started as a community organization, the WSO was later taken under the direction of the college and is the second-oldest orchestra continuously in performance in Ohio. The students heard performances from a variety of musical genres under the direction of conductor Jeffrey Lindberg and also were introduced to specific instruments, including the college’s Davis Memorial Organ, played by Eric Gastier. Prior to the concert, the Women’s Committee “music ladies” visited the classrooms around the county, providing orchestra information and recordings. Those members included DeeDee Carlisle, April Gamble, Ann Gregor, Sally Horning, Mary Jameson, Judy Kastelan, Carolyn Kearney, Pat Miles, Joyce Roe, Inez Shrier and Marilyn Tanner. Tri-county Educational Service Center fine arts consultant Michelle Muro chaired the project and prepared study booklets for the students.
