Hospice seeks donations for Giant Garage Sale

The success of the annual Community Hospice Giant Garage Sale is largely dependent on the items donated by members of the community.

                        

Over the years the annual Community Hospice Giant Garage Sale has featured Harley-Davidson memorabilia, all sorts of collectibles, kayaks, cars, Christmas decorations and patio sets.

“Someone once rode up on a motorcycle and handed over the title right there on the spot,” said Diana Aberth-LeMonte, co-chairman of the sale.

Cars, boats, campers and other vehicles have given big boosts to revenue at the sale. Other items that have brought in significant amounts of money have included a custom-made saddle, a tanning bed and a piece of Bowflex exercise equipment.

The selection of merchandise depends on what area residents donate for the sale, which generally raises more than $50,000 to help Hospice care for patients facing the end of life as well as provides support for their families.

“I would have to say that this is an incredible area filled with generous folks, all to help people they will never know,” Aberth-LeMonte said.

Donations can be dropped off at the Tuscarawas County Fairgrounds in Dover between July 17 and 28 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-8 p.m. and Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The sale takes nearly 200 volunteers to assemble. For several years the Dover High School boys soccer team has helped set up tables, shelving and clothes racks before the sale. This year the Dover girls soccer team will join the effort, helping unload donations from vehicles.

Representatives of Medical Mutual and a crew from NewPointe Community Church’s Community Impact Day also will pitch in during donation drop-offs.

“I remember one year, unexpectedly, a whole church group showed up on a Saturday to help, maybe 20 or so people,” Aberth-LeMonte said. “That’s not to take away from all the folks that commit and show up every day. Somehow it all comes together.”

This year shoppers will be able to get an earlier start for the popular First Choice Night, the opening of the sale on Thursday, Aug. 2, when the best selection of merchandise is available. The sale will open at 3 p.m. and run until 8 p.m. A $5 admission fee is charged on First Choice Night. The sale will continue on Friday, Aug. 3 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 4 from 8 a.m. to noon.

A new addition to the sale are three new food vendors. Kurtz Family Foods will sell funnel cakes and fresh lemonade. Jack and Rich Fries will be available, and shoppers will be able to dig in to Ross Mountain BBQ.

“Community Hospice hosts six major fundraising events, three awareness events and is the beneficiary of four benefits,” said Nic Reynolds, chief financial officer. “Proceeds from all of these events benefit Community Hospice patient care."
