The New Philadelphia Friends of the Library will host its annual Garden Tour fundraiser on Saturday, July 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets for the self-guided tour include six gardens in and around Tuscarawas County and are on sale now.

“This year’s tour will focus on gardens in Northern Tuscarawas County,” Friends President Candy Beaber said. “The proceeds from the garden tour will benefit the Tuscarawas County Library Foundation; last year’s garden tour raised $2,000 for the library foundation.”

The library foundation provides a vessel for the library to receive gifts, and with investment and growth, it will benefit the Tuscarawas County Public Library System and its customers for years to come.

The self-guided tour will showcase gardens in and around Tuscarawas County including a variety of garden types and plants, from ornamental to native and beyond. Gardens on the tour include the following:

Hosta House

Located in Beach City, this garden has 1.5 acres dedicated to plantings. Visitors will find numerous perennials including hydrangeas, 200 varieties of daylilies, over 400 varieties of hostas, succulents, fairy gardens, a koi pond and various fountains displayed throughout the property.

Terra Depot

This nature specialty shop in Navarre features bird feeders, bird houses, garden statuary and more. Tour the tunnel featuring seven heirloom varieties of red raspberries and learn how to support a healthy habitat with native plants including perennials, shrubs and trees.

Monarch Garden

Explore the abundance of perennials at this home in Bolivar. Learn what plants attract butterflies while viewing the butterfly house. See what’s growing in the greenhouse and view this garden’s decorative pond.

Zoar Wetland Arboretum

Nestled just outside the village of Zoar, the wetland is an 82-acre nature park including 50 acres of woodland and 2 miles of walking trails surrounding the 30-acre shallow water marsh. Bird enthusiasts can view over 160 species including bald eagles. Stroll along the arboretum trail that includes 34 different labeled trees or stop and view the variety of succulents and flowers blooming on the terraces.

The Zoar Garden

Dating back to 1830, this garden located in the Historic Zoar Village is laid out as the Separatists of Zoar once had it planted. The garden is a representation of the New Jerusalem from the book of Revelation. Twelve apostle trees circle a large center tree representing Jesus. A variety of modern and historic plantings are available for view including peonies planted by the Separatists. The garden also features a garden house with an attached hot house, one of the first in Ohio.

Rock House Garden

This clearing in the woods located off 7 Mile Drive is surrounded by mature trees, fountains and a picket fence with handmade iron gates. Stroll along the brick and gravel walks to view the Japanese garden, statues and metal sculptures made by the homeowner. Hear the sound of a waterfall from the property’s pond.

Tickets are available to purchase and pick up during normal business hours at the Tuscarawas Main Library in New Philadelphia, the Zoar Store, and the library system’s four branches in Bolivar, Strasburg, Sugarcreek and Tuscarawas. Tickets cost $15 and may be purchased by cash or check made out to the Friends of the Library NP. Those wishing to pay by credit card can purchase tickets at the Tuscarawas Main Library.
