Free health services will be offered to residents of Tuscarawas and surrounding counties during the 2019 GuardCare weekend from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10 and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11 at Buckeye Career Center, 545 University Drive NE, New Philadelphia.

The health services are being offered through a partnership of the Ohio National Guard, Tuscarawas County Health Department, the Ohio Department of Health and local community partners.

Health services that will be provided at no cost include sports physicals, vital signs screenings, EKG testing, vision screenings, hearing screenings, dental screenings, mental-health screenings, drug and alcohol screenings, immunizations, breast and cervical exams, sexually transmitted disease and HIV testing, infant/toddler/young child car seat checks, NARCAN kit distribution while supplies last, drug take-back stations, and Medicaid and Affordable Care Act enrollment. No medications will be provided or available.

People who need public transportation to this event can call the Tuscarawas County Mobility Manager at 330-204-6524.

“All of these health services will be absolutely free to everyone; you will not be asked to pay anything nor asked to provide insurance information. It’s a free health-care weekend for residents of Tuscarawas and surrounding counties,” said Katie Seward, MPH, health commissioner for the Tuscarawas County Health Department.

Created in 1995, GuardCare is a partnership of the Ohio Adjutant General’s Department/Ohio National Guard and the Ohio Department of Health. A GuardCare weekend is usually held once each summer in a different part of the state.

“Through GuardCare, Ohio National Guard soldiers and airmen are able to give back to their community and provide free health-care services to Ohioans. The added benefit is the training and professional development Guard members gain during the event,” said Maj. Gen. John C. Harris, Jr., Ohio adjutant general.

“GuardCare is a tremendous program that we are honored to sponsor each year with the Ohio National Guard and a local health department to help serve individuals and families in a different part of the state,” said Amy Acton, MD, MPH, director of the Ohio Department of Health. “GuardCare weekends would not be possible without the collaboration and contributions of local health departments, local health service professionals and other community service providers.”
