The Falls Prevention Program of the Holmes County General Health District, in association with Cheryl’s Life Fitness, will offer Tai Chi: Moving for Better Balance (also known as Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance) for beginners only.

This free six-week course will be held Tuesdays, Oct. 20 to Nov. 24 from 6-7 p.m. at Cheryl’s Life Fitness Studio, 2440 state Route 83, just south of Millersburg before Lake Buckhorn. The instructor for the class will be Cheryl Seabright. She has been trained through a grant received by the Holmes County General Health District from the Centers for Disease Control and the Ohio Department of Health.

Adults 60 and over are highly encouraged to register. The eight movements participants will learn are low impact in nature and put little stress on muscles and joints. Research has shown this form of exercise can help improve an individual’s strength, balance and flexibility, helping to prevent falls. Be sure to wear loose-fitting clothing for easy movement.

Due to COVID-19, individuals must preregister by calling the health district at 330-674-5035 ext. 251. A maximum of 12 participants will be allowed for the class. No walk-in registration will be allowed. A waiting list will be compiled once the maximum has been met, but no one will be added after week two of the class. A registration form and liability waiver will be sent out to each registered participant and must be returned to the studio on the first day of class. Participants will be socially distanced during class at a minimum of 8 feet. All COVID-19 guidelines will be followed.

Participants are required to wear a mask when entering the studio and will have a COVID-19 screening assessment completed prior to entering the class area. Once class begins, masks can be taken off, but masks must be put back on when exiting the studio and/or when socializing. Hand sanitizer will be made available.

If the public health advisory for Holmes County changes to orange or higher, class will automatically be canceled for the day. For more information on Restart Ohio, visit www.coronavirus.ohio.gov/static/responsible/Gyms-Dance-Instruction.pdf.
