The Tuscarawas County Health Department announced the initiation of a Vivitrol program.  Vivitrol blocks the effects of opioid medication including pain relief or feelings of well-being that can lead to opioid abuse. Vivitrol is used as part of a treatment program for drug or alcohol dependence.

Vivitrol injection also is used to treat alcoholism by reducing a person’s urge to drink alcohol. This may help an individual drink less or stop drinking altogether. Vivitrol is not a cure for drug addiction or alcoholism and should be used in conjunction with addiction counseling.

Vivitrol is typically covered by Medicaid and most private insurances. The program is designed as a four-phase program over 12 months. After completion of the initial four phases, the participant is in a 24-week aftercare or monitoring phase. The phases have standard guidelines of what needs to be accomplished to advance to the next phase. An individual’s progress is not preset on the outlined timelines.

The program will officially launch in September, but TCHD has a preset number of participants they will accept. If you are interested in enrolling or learning more about the program, call 330-343-5555 ext. 164 or ext. 170 or email director@tchdnow.org.
