Holmes Center for the Arts is offering multiple classes this winter. Sign up for the classes at www.holmescenterforthearts.org.
After School Art with Karen Drongowski is tailored for students K-5. Participants will create a variety of projects inspired by renowned artists and art movements. Each session will offer new lessons, allowing students to sign up for one or all. Classes will be held Wednesdays from 4:15-5:15 p.m. for $45 per four-week session. Session one will run Jan. 8, 15, 22 and 29; session two will run Feb. 5, 12, 19 and 26; and session three will run March 5, 12 and 19 and April 2.
Home School Art is available for students K-5 and sixth grade through 12th grade. Elementary students can explore a variety of art mediums, focusing on 2D and 3D forms inspired by great artists and movements, with Drongowski as their instructor. Session one will run Thursdays from Jan. 16 to March 6 from 9:30-11 a.m., and session two will run Thursdays, March 13 and 20; April 3, 10, 17 and 24; and May 1 and 8 at the same time. Each eight-week session costs $125.
Middle and high school students will study with Cathie Lynch, focusing on improving drawing and painting techniques while exploring a range of forms including clay and digital art. Students should bring a sketchbook to each class. Dates and time are the same.
Monthly Paint Nights with Drongowski are designed for teens and adults interested in learning various painting techniques including acrylic pour. Paint nights are scheduled for Fridays, Jan. 17, Feb. 7, March 7 and April 4 from 6-8 p.m. Each session costs $30, with monthly examples available on the HCA website.
Adult art classes with Drongowski will provide participants with a chance to get creative in a supportive environment. Ongoing Wednesday classes will run from 5:15-6:15 p.m. for $10 per class, and Thursday sessions will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. for $15 per class. No preregistration is required.
Winter Birds in Watercolor with Michelle Steffen offers an opportunity to practice watercolor techniques while painting symbolic winter birds. This class, open to teens and adults, will be held Fridays, Jan. 10, Feb. 21 and March 21 from 6-8 p.m. at $75 per session. Each class is limited to eight students, and participants are asked to bring their own watercolor paints (details will be sent to those who register). Quality paper will be provided.
Wheel-Throwing Ceramics with Eric Yoder caters to beginners and advanced students age 16 and up. Participants will learn to use a potter’s wheel to create functional ceramic pieces or refine their existing skills. Classes will run Tuesdays, Jan. 14 to Feb. 25 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The seven-week course costs $150 plus a $40 supply fee.
The Sculptural Valentine Box Creation Workshop with Lydia Johnson invites children K-6 to decorate a shoebox with trims and personal touches. The class, limited to 18 students, will take place Monday, Jan. 20 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. for $15. Students should bring a shoebox, preferably painted or covered in paper.
On Saturday, Jan. 11 from 1-3 p.m., Marlea Hershberger-Leinbach will lead Dogwood in Bloom, a multimedia project using torn paper and acrylic paint on Masonite. Open to teens and adults, the class costs $30 and includes materials.
On Saturday, Jan. 25 from 1-3 p.m., Hershberger-Leinbach will teach Radiating Design, an acrylic painting workshop focused on symmetrical folk art-inspired designs. Open to teens and adults, this session is $30 and includes materials.
Jeannette Perez will offer Drawing Fundamentals for Tweens — Still Life for age 9-13, running Saturdays from Feb. 1 to March 1 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. This five-week course, priced at $60, emphasizes observational skills, shape recognition, composition and shading.
Age 14 and up can explore similar principles in Perez’s Drawing Fundamentals — Portraits, held Saturdays, Feb. 1 to March 1 from 1:30-3 p.m. for $85. Using themselves as models, participants will work on accurately capturing portraits.
For age 9-13, Drawing Fundamentals for Tweens — Portraits will run Saturdays, March 15 and 22 and April 5, 12 and 26 from 12:30-1:30 p.m., with Perez as the teacher. This five-week session is $60. Using themselves as models, participants will work on accurately capturing portraits.
Age 14 and up can attend Perez’s Drawing Fundamentals — Still Life, running Saturdays, March 15 and 22 and April 5, 12 and 26 from 1:30-3 p.m. for $85. Students will work from observation using a series of shapes and objects (still life). Basic art principles of shape, composition and shading will be introduced and practiced.
Lydia Johnson will offer a Calico Cat Needle Felting Workshop on Monday, Feb. 17 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Open to fifth-graders through adults, this session costs $25, and all supplies needed to create a 3D felted cat with wool roving will be provided.
Chris Franks will lead a four-week stained glass class on Mondays, Jan. 27 and Feb. 3, 10 and 24 from 3:30-5 p.m. Participants will craft a 9-by-12-inch stained glass panel with a border, with supplies included for $95. Space is limited to eight participants. For safety reasons long hair should be tied back, and shoes should be close-toed.
For those interested in languages, Rebecca Miller’s beginner German class will run Mondays from Jan. 27 to March 3 from 6-7:15 p.m. The six-week course costs $72 plus a $20 book fee.
On Tuesdays, Jan. 21 to Feb. 25, Colette Propri will teach beginner Spanish from 5-6:15 p.m. The six-week course costs $72, with an $18 book fee.
Addie White’s Digital Art sessions, open to age 9 and up, will run Saturdays, Jan. 11 to Feb. 1 and Feb. 15 to March 8 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Each four-week session costs $45 and teaches students to create digital art using Procreate on iPad Pro.
On select Saturdays — Jan. 18, Feb. 15 and March 15 — from 9-10 a.m., local artist Dylan Olsen will offer cartooning workshops for kids and teens, priced at $12 per class.
Mary Gilmore’s Clay Face Pot for Kids Workshop is scheduled for Saturday, March 8 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. The session costs $18 and is open to children age 8 and up, with a limit of 10 participants. Gilmore will host a similar workshop for teens and adults on Friday, March 14 from 6-8 p.m. for $30, also limited to 10 students.
Open Studio Oil Painting welcomes participants every Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon for $5. Artists of all levels are encouraged to bring their supplies and join the group. No registration is required.
