Full-service kitchens needed

Letter to the Editor:

As the food service director for the New Philadelphia City School District, I know it faces many issues in providing a safe, secure and quality educational learning environment for our students.

In my travels to the different buildings, it is very apparent they are aging and outdated. The passage of time has taken its toll.

One such issue the district currently deals with is very important to me. Citizens may not be aware that the food service department transports meals from the high school cafeteria to all five elementary schools each school day. We take every precaution to ensure the food is delivered hot and ready to serve. By preparing large quantities of food and transporting it to five buildings, there is a tendency to lose some of the initial quality from when the product is first taken out of the oven.

A one-campus district with full-service kitchens in the buildings where meals could be prepared and served fresh out of the oven would eliminate this problem.

When I think about the possibility of having full-service kitchens in the buildings on one campus, the idea excites me. This is just one small issue in the big picture of benefits our students would receive in new buildings. Our students — your children — deserve it!

Please vote in favor of Issue 4 on the March 17 primary election ballot.

Cindy Jones

Food service director, New Philadelphia City Schools
