Tuscarawas County Historical Society curator Kim Jurkovic will present a cemetery tour on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. at the East Avenue Cemetery in New Philadelphia. The tour will feature the burial sites of World War I veterans.

Nov. 11 marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War, and to commemorate this event, Jurkovic will lead the tour with information about local veterans.

The tour will begin near the veteran area of the cemetery, sometimes referred to as the Soldier’s Circle, and will involve quite a bit of walking, covering nine sections of the cemetery.

The land for the cemetery was purchased from the Zimmerman farm in March 1891. In June 1892 surveyor Joseph Welty was engaged in laying out the lots, and the grading and driveways were almost complete.

The tour will cover material on 10 veterans and is free and open to the public.
