Glenmont Homecoming is exactly that, a homecoming for all of the individuals and family who have ever or still call Glenmont their home. However, it also is a time when they invite people from all over the county to come and enjoy a relaxing day, along with a 5k run and chicken barbecue.

Homecoming will take place Saturday, Aug. 7 at the former Glenmont School, where there will be a chicken barbecue, raffle and the 5k run.

“It really is like a big reunion-type atmosphere,” said Tom Alexander, who spearheads the 5k run. “It’s been going on for as long as I can remember, and I’ve been around a while.”

The 5k run will kick off at 8 a.m., and runners of all ability are welcome to attend. Alexander said even those who want to walk the 5k will find it fun. The run will begin at the Glenmont Trail.

While the 5k entry fee is $15, Alexander said they find ways to make sure everyone gets their money’s worth for the day. Whether it is in providing participants with free raffle tickets, Gatorade or other goodies, he said people who join the run will be presented with plenty of items to offset the cost of the entry fee.

The 50/50 raffle is $10 per entry and includes the first-place prize of a Blackstone grill, with prizes of $100, $75 and $50 serving as the second- through fourth-place prizes. Winners need not be present at the time of the drawing.

The barbecue chicken dinner will be sold on a drive-thru basis only and will be available for $10 per dinner. The chicken dinner sale will begin at 11 a.m. and go until it is sold out. The meal will include a barbecue chicken half, baked beans, noodles and cookies or a barbecue pork sandwich meal for those who don’t prefer chicken.

All of the proceeds from the event will go to the Richland Township Fire Department and EMS squad, which serves Glenmont and the surrounding area.
