Historic Schoenbrunn Village Children’s Day, a hands-on event packed with demonstrations and activities featuring life in the 18th century, will be Saturday, June 19 from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Founded in 1772 by Moravian missionaries, Schoenbrunn stands today as a partial reconstruction of the original village. Home of the first school and church in Ohio, the village at its height had over 400 inhabitants.

Due to pressures from the British and the colonists during the Revolutionary War, Schoenbrunn was abandoned in 1777. Today, there are 17 reconstructed buildings including the school and church on their original sites.

Historic Schoenbrunn Village will take kids of all ages back to the 18th century. Children will have the chance to watch trades like butter churning, candle dipping and corn grinding, and they can try these activities on their own.

Other activities include sewing, quill writing and cabin building. Kids can imagine what being a soldier in the 18th century may have been like by taking part in military drills. They also can test their strength and reflexes with Colonial and Native American games.

“We are excited to offer many brand-new activities that will make this year extra special,” said Kyle Von Kamp, chair of the event. “Tin punching, navigation demos and primitive cooking demonstrations along with other activities will round out this year’s event.”

New this year, each ticketed child age 3-15 will leave with a bag full of additional activities they can do at home to continue their learning about Historic Schoenbrunn Village. Additional bags will be for sale in the gift shop.

Tickets for the event are limited. Prepurchase is recommended and can be found on the Historic Schoenbrunn Village Eventbrite page at www.schoenbrunnvillage.eventbrite.com. Tickets are $6 for everyone age 3 and up. Children age 2 and under are free. Visitors will select a time to enter into the village. Once inside, the village guests can stay as long as they like. It should take about 1.5 hours to complete all activities. They cannot guarantee tickets will be available at the door.

They are partnering with local organizations this year including First National Bank of Dennison (bronze event sponsor), The Tuscarawas County Historical Society (activity bag sponsor) and Firelands Chapter of the Children of the American Revolution.

Masks will be strongly recommended for all visitors to Historic Schoenbrunn Village. However, COVID-19 guidelines change rapidly so watch their Facebook event page for up-to-date information.
