Technology is an amazing thing, but with it comes some unique challenges.

Due to ongoing technological advancement, many electronic products quickly become obsolete, creating a large surplus of unwanted electronic products or E-waste. Disposing of E-waste in landfills has the potential to cause human and environmental health impacts.

Two area entities are combining their efforts to provide an opportunity for the community to properly dispose of E-waste products.

The Franklin Township E-waste & Appliance Collection Day will take place Saturday, May 17 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Franklin Township House, 132 W. Moreland Road.

The event will be hosted by Moreland Community Historical Society, Franklin Township Trustees, Stark-Tuscarawas-Wayne Recycling District and Wayco Recycling.

According to Dave Bricker, MCHS secretary and Franklin Township trustee, this event is a chance for all involved parties to give back to the community.

“Our community does so much for us over the years that we like to take opportunities like this to give back to them,” Bricker said. “We are providing a service to the community, as well as doing something positive ecologically that is important. We believe it is important to let everyone know that we appreciate their support.”

The partial list of items being accepted includes automotive, truck and industrial batteries; cellphones and mobile devices; telephones and accompanying equipment; computers, laptops, iPads and parts; disk drives, hard drives and floppy drives; movies, DVDs, DVD players and Software CDs; flat-screen monitors (all types), flat-screen televisions and computer monitors with glass tube ($10 each); televisions rear projection ($25 each); CRT (tube) televisions of 20 inches and smaller ($10 each); CRT (tube) televisions above 20-inches ($20 each); household electronics and appliances; business machines and copy machines; power equipment and power tools; and scrap metal.

Tires will not be taken at this event.

“Basically, if it plugs in or works off a battery, we will take it,” Bricker said. “Plus, we want people to know that they are more than welcome to bring in their traditional recycling as well.”

Large appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, ranges, microwaves, washers, dryers and dehumidifiers also will be accepted. Hazardous materials will not be accepted this year.

If someone is a Franklin Township resident and has a large appliance and needs assistance in loading or transporting the appliance, pickup services will be provided May 13-15.

There will be a charge of $25. Call 330-317-7551 or 330-263-0313.

All proceeds will benefit the Moreland Community Historical Society.

In conjunction with the recycling day, the Franklin Township Trustees will be available to hear people’s concerns or ideas. They also will distribute some safety items to Franklin Township residents. These items have been made available by using funds from the Wooster Community Hospital’s board and were given to the township to promote safety.
