National Nutrition Month culminated with a proclamation from the Wayne County Commissioners during a recent session to bring awareness to the importance of healthy eating for a healthy lifestyle.

“We definitely do a lot of work in this area to ensure that residents (have access) to healthy food,” Wayne County Health Commissioner Nick Cascarelli said. “Our community health promotion coordinator, who is also a registered dietitian, is working with the Orrville community to start a farmers market there. We are also the site of the Women, Infants and Children program for Wayne County, which serves over 1,100 Wayne County women and children each month.

“Our dietitians in the WIC program work with families to educate them on the importance of healthy eating. We also host a monthly food pantry in conjunction with the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank.”

Understanding nutritional guidelines is crucial for anyone looking to improve their health and well-being. At the core of these guidelines is the emphasis on balance, variety and moderation. A balanced diet means incorporating a range of foods from all food groups: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats.

Additionally, paying attention to added sugars, sodium and unhealthy fats is essential. It’s recommended to limit these components, as excessive intake can lead to various health issues including heart disease, diabetes and obesity.

“There is a need throughout Wayne County and beyond to continue nutrition education and healthy eating habits,” Commissioner Matt Martin said. “We encourage all citizens to develop healthy eating habits and make informed food choices, not only in March, but all year.”
