Free sustainable living faire at the county library

The Tuscarawas County Public Library System will hold its first sustainable living faire Feb. 24 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Tuscarawas County Main Library, 121 Fair Ave. NW, New Philadelphia. Guests can expect to meet local vendors and organizations as they explore homesteading, traditional skills and renewable resources.
“In addition to demonstrations and informational tables, guests can visit one of the many breakout classes to gain a new skill,” Director Michelle McMorrow Ramsell said. “As a library we are thrilled to encourage adults and families to learn traditional and sustainable living skills, to collaborate with one another, and to explore new ideas.”
The county library has partnered with local businesses, area organizations and community members who embrace all levels of sustainable living to create this free event.
Ramsell said the Saturday event will focus on demonstrations and hands-on activities from places including Rural Action, Hand Hewn Farms, Simpler Thyme, OSU Extension, Dr. Randi Pokladnik and more.
“There will be something to inspire everyone regardless of your interest or your age,” public relations associate Marisa Bleininger said. “There is a nice combination of demonstrations and informational tables from soap making and seed saving to solar panels and forest farming.”
Learn what it takes to create an energy-efficient home from solar panels to geothermal energy from Pokladnik. Rural Action will teach guests mushroom inoculation, forest farming and how to apply for energy-efficient tax credits. Hand Hewn Farms will demonstrate how to butcher the front shoulder of a hog.
Certified master herbalist Julia Brown, owner of Simpler Thyme, will discuss planning your kitchen herb garden. Sunny Hive Orchard will be available to discuss beekeeping. Boy Scout Troop 84 will provide a knot-tying demonstration, and the OSU Extension will lead a class on canning and preserving.
“These are just a few of the anchor exhibits that are sure to inspire innovation and challenge us to learn something new,” adult and teen services manager Robyn Guedel said. “Throughout the faire attendees can partake in over 20 classes or demonstrations with local vendors and organizations.”
