Sam Hitchcock, Democratic Party nominee in the Tuscarawas County Commissioners race, has withdrawn his name from the ballot for the general election.

“It has been my desire to run for county commissioner for several years,” Hitchcock said. “Due to my recent health concerns, I believe it is in the best interest of my family, my health and the citizens of Tuscarawas County that I withdraw my name for the office of county commissioner.”

Hitchcock has served as councilman and president of council for the City of New Philadelphia for many years and is known for his community volunteerism throughout the county and most notably with the New Philadelphia First Town Days.

"By withdrawing my name from the ballot at this time, I believe it will allow plenty of time for another Democrat to build a strong campaign for the general election in November," Hitchcock said. "It has truly been my honor and pleasure to serve as an elected official, and I will continue to serve the citizens of Tuscarawas County in any way I possibly can.”

“We hate to see Sam withdraw from this race but absolutely understand that his health comes first," said Gail Garbrandt Rubert, Tuscarawas County Democratic Party chairwoman. "We are so appreciative of all that he has done for the Democratic Party and to the citizens of New Philadelphia and throughout the county.”

The Tuscarawas County Democratic Central Committee will select a candidate to fill the slot on the ballot.

According to Martha Campbell, Central Committee chair, the organizational meeting of the newly elected Democratic Central Committee members will be held Monday, June 4 at 6 p.m. at Democratic Headquarters, 1260 Monroe St. NW, New Philadelphia.

“Anyone interested in being considered to fill this Democratic nomination on the ballot should plan to attend the meeting to be introduced to the members of the Central Committee,” Campbell said. “If any interested candidate has any questions, please contact me at martha.jane.campbell@gmail.com or 330-340-0390.”
