New Philadelphia Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1445 is launching a Hometown Hero Banner Program in partnership with the City of New Philadelphia.

The banners will feature area men and women who have served in all branches of the United States Armed Forces over the years including currently serving military members.

“We would like to honor those individuals by decorating the city with banners that show an appreciation for the sacrifices made by our area service members,” said Jerry Chenevey, post chaplain.

The city will mount and display the 18-by-36-inch banners on utility poles along North and South Broadway, between Fair Avenue and Front Street. The banners’ cost is being paid for by VFW Post 1445 and Ohio VFW Charities, and they will be displayed annually from Memorial Day through Veterans Day.

The banners will be replaced each year with a new set of banners and service members featured. If there are more applications than banners in a given year, the names will be drawn randomly, and names not drawn will remain in the drawing for the next year.

High-quality photographs may be dropped off, and an application may be completed at the post during normal business hours. The information needed includes service members’ name, rank and branch; years served; and where he/she served and unit served with. Where he/she served also could be a ship name.

For a chance to be included in the 2023 class, photos and applications need to be submitted ASAP to VFW Post 1445, 441 Park Ave. NW, New Philadelphia.
