With global warming making weather harsher and more unpredictable and global politics increasingly volatile, people everywhere need to learn preparedness skills to protect their families, neighbors and pets. Kathy Harrison’s new guide, "Prepping 101," offers readers practical steps to make their families more prepared and give them peace of mind.

Harrison will be at Lehman’s annual Fall Festival on Saturday, Sept. 21 with presentations based on "Prepping 101."

The presentation, "Be Prepared, Not Scared - Why Bother?" will be at 11 a.m. The presentation, "Short-Term and Long-Term Power Outages - How to Prepare," will be at 1 p.m.

Author and preparedness expert Harrison offers a step-by-step approach to emergency preparation that is especially suitable for busy families. The information is presented in 40 doable tasks ranging from simple jobs such as creating a preparedness notebook and repackaging store-bought food for storage to more involved projects such as collecting rainwater and building a solar oven. Harrison encourages readers not only to prepare their own family and household, but also to work with neighbors to create a stronger, more resilient community.

Harrison has practiced disaster preparedness with her family and community for more than 15 years and is noted for her rational, nonalarmist approach. As Harrison puts it, “I’m not saying we all need to build bunkers. I prep so that I can be a community resource. I want to help others prepare because we all do better working together. I’m not afraid my neighbors will ask me for something. I hope they do, and I hope I can let them know when I need help too.”

Harrison is the author of "Just in Case," as well as "Another Place at the Table" and "One Small Boat." She is a national spokesperson, touring and giving lectures for both family preparedness and foster parenting. She has appeared on TODAY, Oprah, National Geographic’s "Doomsday Preppers" and NPR. She lives with her family in Western Massachusetts.

Lehman’s Kidron store is located at 4779 Kidron Road in Kidron.
