The Welty Middle School community service program WeCan, which is an acronym for Welty Cares about New Philadelphia, is planning its second annual Fall Leaf Raking project for senior citizens on Saturday, Nov. 6. In the event of rain, the event will be held Saturday, Nov. 13.

“The Fall Leaf Raking will be one of our biggest service projects this school year and we would appreciate you giving us the opportunity to rake your leaves,” said Sharon Ricklic who coordinates the project at the middle school.

In order to be placed on the list, New Philadelphia senior citizens must contact the school by Friday, Oct. 29 to provide their information including their name, telephone number, address and number of trees on their lot.

Information can be dropped off, emailed or mailed to:

Welty Middle School, 315 4th Street N.W., New Philadelphia, OH 44663.

A group of students and an adult volunteer will be assigned to each yard. You will not be contacted. All students, school staff members and other adult volunteers will arrive on the scheduled day to rake leaves.

“Through our service program we hope to instill in students the value of community service while also increasing their self-esteem,” said Ricklic.

Some students have never raked leaves before or participated in service related activities.
