Adults in Tuscarawas County are encouraged to participate in the county library’s 21 in ‘21 Reading Challenge. Participants are challenged to read 21 different books from specific genres throughout 2021. Those that complete the challenge will receive a free “The Library Is My Happy Place” mug.

“We really wanted to find a way to involve adults in our reading challenges that we host,” adult services manager Robyn Guedel said. “We want to get rid of the notion that the library only hosts fun reading challenges for kids.”

Interested participants can download the Beanstack Tracker app on any smart phone or tablet or by visiting tusclibrary.beanstack.org on the web. A paper version of the challenge also will be offered in the latest edition of Between the Lines, the library programming newsletter that will be delivered by mail to homes in Tuscarawas County.

According to Guedel, Beanstack allows library customers to track their reading and earn badges for each title they read.

“If anyone participated in our Summer Reading Program this past summer, they will be familiar with this app,” Guedel said. “It is really simple to use, but if anyone has any issues or questions, they can always call their nearest county library location and we would be more than happy to walk them through the process.”

Examples of the different genres and challenges included in this program range from reading a book a friend suggests and rereading a book you read in high school to challenging participants to read a book from a genre they have never read before.

“We really think our customers are going to enjoy this new reading challenge,” library director Michelle McMorrow Ramsell said. “Our staff has been busy throughout 2020 coming up with creative ways to keep our library customers engaged with the library and creating programs and reading challenges that offer our community a way to have fun while still staying safe.”

The 21 in ’21 Reading Challenge began Jan. 1 and runs through Dec. 31. Participants are only eligible to complete the challenge once.
