Smithville will hold its Memorial Day services on Monday, May 28. The speaker this year will be James Dull (USAF retired), who will explain his roll in notifying “Next of Kin.” He will share some of his stories and experiences during his time of service.

The parade will form on North Milton Street at 8 a.m., following a path to Berky Field House. The Ruritans will have a float, and they will invite all veterans to ride on it or fall in behind it. Scouts, majorettes, youth groups, bands, antique vehicles, off-duty firefighters and police, and families will proceed the central firing entry, which will step off at 8:15 a.m. with a two-riffle volley.

The speaker will speak at the Berky Field House, where the 555th Honors Detachment will present military honors.

Following the service at the field house, visitors will proceed to the Smithville Veterans Memorial to witness a small service. Votive candles will be provided for those wishing to commemorate those who have passed. Red coasters will designate those killed in action (military or first responder), blue will represent deceased veterans and white will represent any loved ones. The candles will be guarded from 8 a.m. to noon, at which time the flag will be raised to full staff.

The National Moment of Remembrance will be at 3 p.m.
