Former students of Midvale and Indian Valley North high schools will gather Saturday, Sept. 21 at 5 p.m. for the semi-annual Midvale High School Alumni Reunion. The reunion is open to classes from all years at the schools and will be held at the New Philadelphia Elks Lodge.

“We used to gather the alumni graduates from Midvale,” event organizer Lucy Bonner Ricklic said. “Over the years we added people who went to grade school together but may have moved away. We wanted to include them as well. Then we included former students from Indian Valley North.”

Ricklic said gathering classes into a larger group made sense as earlier classes shrank. “There are few graduates from the 1930s and 1940s who are able to attend,” she said. “Those classes are now pretty small.”

The reunion is open to anyone who attended Midvale or Indian Valley North schools. The deadline to register for the alumni reunion was Aug. 20, but Ricklic said as long as people get registered, they won’t be turned away. Call her at 330-364-4177 or Mallory Holmes Hutchison at 330-339-2618 to get a copy of the registration form.

Cost for the reunion and the buffet dinner is $25 per person. The dinner includes roast beef, chicken, potatoes, green beans, pasta, salad, rolls with butter, dessert, coffee and tea. Soft drinks are available for $1.

“We always have a really good turnout. Last time was close to 300 people,” Ricklic said.

In fact the large number of people from scattered classes meant it became necessary to divide everyone up by decade for the group picture.

Photographer Shellyn Leeper will take photographs that evening, which can be purchased for $15. They will be mailed out to buyers after the reunion.

The alumni reunion for 2019 will feature a speaker well known to generations of students. “Keith Pretorius was a chemistry teacher for many of the classes, and he will be our featured speaker that night,” Ricklic said. “I’m sure he’ll have a lot of memories to share, and I suppose it’s been long enough for most of us that we can stand to hear some of those stories.”

The reunion honors a different class each time it gathers together, and this year the classes from 1968 and 1969 from Indian Valley North will be honored. “We’ll have a special roll call for them and some other special activities,” Ricklic said.

Music will be provided by a disc jockey, and Ricklic said younger alumni have been coming in recent years. “And I hope a lot of them will get up and dance,” she said.

Raffles and prize giveaways should make for a fun evening, no matter how much dancing happens.

Midvale High School was torn down in 2005; students since have been Indian Valley graduates. Ricklic said the collective years of graduating classes from each school make for a wide range in age for attendees. “Last time the oldest attending member was 98 years old,” she said.

Indian Valley South, which took in Gnadenhutten, and Indian Valley North in Midvale consolidated to form Indian Valley School District in 1988.
