The Orrville Public Library has the following events and programs scheduled for May. Call the library at 330-683-1065 for more information.

StoryWalk

The first book for Orrville Public Library’s 2023 StoryWalkseason is now up. The featured book is “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” by Bill Martin, Jr. and John Archambault. This month’s sponsor is Orrville Public Library Friends. The StoryWalk is located east of the dog park and is accessible from the Rails-to-Trails bike path and walking trail. Parking is available on North Ella Street. After completing a walk, be sure to stop by the children’s department to complete a prize entry form for the library’s StoryWalkchallenge. There will be monthly prize drawings, and all entries will go in for a chance at a grand prize.

Cookbook Club

“The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Super Easy!” by Ree Drummond is the cookbook everyone needs. It contains 120 recipes that range from breakfasts to desserts. A variety of styles are included — from one-pot meals to casseroles and sheet pan suppers. Pick up a copy of the cookbook at the library’s circulation desk and plan to come to the library’s 6 p.m. meeting on Monday, May 1. Prepare a dish or two to share with others. No registration is necessary.

What are you reading?

Join library staff on Facebook on Tuesday, May 2 at 8 p.m. for Book Buzz. Participants will share information about the books they have been reading. No registration is necessary.

May the 4th

Stop by the library on Thursday, May 4 to enjoy a variety of “Star Wars” activities. The library will have cardboard cutouts of favorite characters throughout the library for photo ops. May 4 also is the 2023 Growing Healthy Habits Orrville Moves initiative kickoff. This fitness program encourages exercise throughout the summer and early fall. Each participant will receive a travel bottle of sunscreen and a scannable card that features a customized QR code. The card can be scanned at various locations in Orrville for people to record their walking activity.

Plant exchange

Have hostas and daylilies taken over your flower beds? Divide and label them and bring them to the library’s plant exchange on Saturday, May 6. The free exchange will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Any healthy, portable plants/bulbs/tubers are welcome. Don’t have anything to donate? Come anyway to find something new for your garden. Master gardener Ann McPeek will be on hand to answer plant-related questions.

Mother’s Day story time

Children age 3-5 are invited to celebrate their mom at the library’s special story time. Kids can sing songs, hear stories and make a craft for Mom during this story time. Choose either the 11 a.m. or 6 p.m. session on Monday, May 8. Registration is required. Register on the library’s website calendar at www.orrville.lib.oh.us or by calling the children’s department at 330-683-1065.

Kindergarten readiness

Ready to Learn is a special program the library offers to help soon-to-be kindergartners get ready to begin school. Attendees will participate in free activities that focus on learning numbers and letters and developing cutting skills. Each child attending this free event on Tuesday, May 9 at 6 or 7 p.m. will receive a picture book and kindergarten-readiness activities for practice at home over the summer.

Children should be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required and can be done online by clicking the program title on the library’s website calendar. Registration also can be made by calling the children’s department. Class sizes are limited.

May book club

Three women with very different backgrounds come together during WWII while training to break German military codes. But the pressure of secrecy destroys their friendship and even sends one of them to an asylum. Years later an encrypted letter appears from the shadow of their past and brings their true enemy closer and closer.

“The Rose Code” by Kate Quinn is the library’s book club selection for May. Copies of the book are located in the new fiction area just inside the library’s front door. Plan to come to the book club on Thursday, May 11 to share your thoughts on the book. Come to either the 10:30 a.m. or the 6:30 p.m. gathering. No registration is needed.

Children’s book club

Kids grades 4-6 are invited to join the library children’s staff for their own book club. This month the club will meet Thursday, May 11 at 6:30 p.m. The book to read is “The Lemonade War” by Jacqueline Davies.

In this book brother and sister go head to head in an all-out war to see who can sell the most lemonade before school starts. Participants will share their thoughts about the book and participate in a game, activity or craft and get a snack that pertains to the book.

Books will be available in the children’s department. Registration is required. Register on the library’s website calendar or by calling the children’s department.
