Public welcome to count birds
Launched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, the Great Backyard Bird Count was the first online citizen-science project to collect data on wild birds and to display results in near real time.
Now more than 160,000 people of all ages and walks of life worldwide join the count each February to create an annual snapshot of the distribution and abundance of birds.
Camp Muskingum invites the community to participate on President’s Day, Monday, Feb. 19, rain or shine, from 8 a.m to 4 p.m. to tally the number and kinds of birds seen. Participants can count as long or as short a time frame as they want.
The camp offers varied habitats such as lake front, forest and open fields. Bird watchers can choose from many outdoor and select indoor locations on the 200-acre camp. People of all ages and abilities are welcome. The camp does ask those under 16 to have a responsible adult with them.
Tally sheets, instructions and suggestions of possible bird-watching locations will be available to bird watchers. The tally sheet totals will be entered by Camp Muskingum, or individuals who are members of EBird should use Camp Muskingum as their birding site. The camp also will have binoculars available for a minimal deposit fee and hot chocolate, tea and coffee for all participants.
