The Holmes County Republican Party met Monday, Sept. 30 and appointed Eric Strouse to replace Ray Eyler as Holmes County commissioner after Eyler vacated his position for health reasons. Ohio law required the party central committee act to name a successor to complete Eyler’s term.

Because the voters had already elected Strouse to succeed Eyler when his term ends in January, party chairman Rob Hovis said it only made sense the committee would appoint Strouse to complete the current term before beginning the one to which he will be elected on Nov. 5.

Eyler served the Holmes County community with distinction for many years, most recently as county commissioner, and also as a long-term executive of Holmes Wayne Electric and a member of the Holmes District One Fire Department. He also is a veteran of military service.

In other business the Republican Central Committee reelected its officers for another two-year term: Hovis, chairman; Matt Johnson, vice chairman; Jane Graven, secretary; and Dan Jackson, treasurer.

The committee concluded by discussing plans for the annual hog roast, set for Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. at the Airport Ridge Sporting Clays Lodge, with featured speaker Brigit Moreno, wife of U.S. Senate candidate Bernie Moreno, and other candidates who will be on the Nov. 5 ballot. The committee also heard reports on the local campaign headquarters, now open at 111 S. Washington St., where voters may get candidate yard signs. The headquarters is open Mondays and Fridays from 3-7 p.m. and Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.
