Cletus D. "Clete" Conrad

Cletus D. "Clete" Conrad died Sunday, March 10, 2019.

Cletus was born April 2, 1927, to the late Raymond and Mattie (Stutzman) Conrad in Aurora. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to the original Conrad farm near Alliance, where he spent his early years.

Clete was a 1945 graduate of Louisville High School and a 1950 graduate of Mount Union College, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. He was a World War II draftee and assigned to the U.S. Navy for the duration of the war.

On March 31, 1951, Clete married Ruth Friedt, an Orrville native. Their home was established in Orrville, where they lived their entire married life. They celebrated 67 wonderful years together; she survives.

Clete was employed by Westinghouse Electric Corporation as a purchasing manager for 35 years.

Most important to Clete was the opportunity Orrville provided for good family living and community service. Serving the community was important to him. He served on Orrville City Council and the Orrville Civil Service Commission. He was a board member of Central Christian School, the Orrville YMCA and OrrVilla Retirement Community. He was an active member of the Orrville Mennonite Church, where he served as an elder and Sunday school teacher.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Wendy (Ken) Swartzentruber of Apple Creek and Peggy Conrad of Orrville; a son, Tom (Jan) Conrad of Wadsworth; six grandchildren, Nichole (Patrick) Tebbano, Ryan (Kristen) Conrad, Joshua (Lindsey) Conrad, Joni (Ben) Fuller, Heather (Ryan) Miller and Holly (Joel) Mast; 17 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Jerry (Melva) Conrad of Hartville.

Clete was preceded in death by a sister, Naomi Ulrich.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 14 at Orrville Mennonite Church, 1305 W. Market St., Orrville. Burial will take place at Crown Hill Cemetery in Orrville.
