Grant T. Carr, age 92 of Smithville, died early Sunday morning, March 31, 2019, at Brenn-Field Nursing Center in Orrville, following a period of declining health.

Grant was born Feb. 12, 1927, in Seville to the late Ezra and Cora (Fulton) Carr, graduated from Apple Creek High School with the class of 1945 and served in the United States Army from 1945-47. He married Kathryn E. Beck on Oct. 15, 1948, in Smithville. Kathryn died on March 1, 2005.

Following his service in the Army, Grant graduated from Wooster Business College and was employed at The Farm Bureau, as an office manager at Wooster Products, and a controller for Sandy Supply Company and Wooster Tool. Upon retirement he sold real estate for Barber Realty.

Grant was a longtime member, treasurer and Sunday School teacher at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Smithville. He also was the former mayor of Smithville from 1964-70 and a former Boy Scout leader in the late 1950s. Grant enjoyed gardening and sitting quietly at Smithville football games, of which he missed only one game in 35 years. He also enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and visited every county fair in the state of Ohio with his wife.

Surviving are six sons, Jeffrey Carr of Wooster, Philip (Beth) Carr of Howard, Ohio, Steven (Nancy) Carr of Smithville, Douglas Carr of Smithville, Andrew (Lynn) Carr of Wooster and Matthew (Heather) Carr of Orrville; eight grandchildren, Tyler Carr of Shelby, Zachary (Lauren) Carr of Delaware, Ohio, Shelly Warder of Miami, Florida, Sarah (Andy) Bratcher of Smithville, Amy (Sean) Plank of Richmond, Kentucky, Katy (Lepear) Smith of Smithville, David Carr of Orrville and Benjamin Carr of Orrville; seven great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law, Jim (Sue) Beck of Orrville.

In addition to his wife and parents, Grant was preceded in death by his son, Joseph Carr; infant daughter, Laura Carr; sister, Lola Forrer; and brother-in-law, Dorence Forrer.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 5 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 777 S. Summit St., Smithville, with Pastor Kristy Buyok officiating. Burial will take place at Smithville Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday at Auble Funeral Home, 512 E. Oak St., Orrville, and also from 10-11 a.m. on Friday at the church.
