Mary Lou Wachtel

                        

Mary Lou Wachtel, age 84 of Orrville, died Thursday, April 11, 2019, at LifeCare Hospice in Wooster, following a period of declining health.

Mary Lou was born Aug. 1, 1934, in Loudonville, the daughter of the late Irvin and Hazel (Minard) Mumper. She graduated from Loudonville High School in 1952, where she was proud to be in several class plays and musical organizations. She earned a bachelor's degree in vocational home economics from the Ohio State University in 1955 and later received a master's degree in education from the Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati.

Mary Lou was active in 4-H club, where she met W. Wayne Wachtel while both were 4-H camp counselors. They were married on June 10, 1956, in the Zion Lutheran Church in Loudonville. Wayne survives.

Mary Lou taught vocational home economics for 31 years, locally at Waynedale High School and ending her career in 1991 with 15 years at Tuslaw Local School. She guided 12 girls in getting their coveted state homemakers award, of which three were state officers and one was an international officer.

Mary Lou was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Orrville, where she sang in the choir and was a Sunday school teacher. She also enjoyed golf and played in the Riceland Ladies Golf League and previously served as president for the Orrville AAUW.

Surviving in addition to her husband, Wayne, are her daughter, Linda (J.D.) Plybon of Orrville; two sons, Ronald (Carey) Wachtel of Canal Fulton and Randall Wachtel of Columbus; five grandchildren, Hillary Plybon, Hannah Plybon, Allison Plybon, Kellan Towns and Matthew Wachtel; three siblings, Joann (Ken) Utterback of Loudonville, Larry (Karyle) Mumper of Marion and Elaine Vastine of Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents; a sister; and brothers-in-law, Jean (Paul) Kauffman and Bill Vastine.

Friends may call on Monday at Auble Funeral Home, 512 E. Oak St., Orrville, from 4-7 p.m. Online registry and expressions of condolence may be made at the funeral home's website at www.aublefuneralhome.com.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 16 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1556 Rex Drive, Orrville, with the Rev. Dr. David Rittgers officiating. Burial of ashes will take place at Crown Hill Cemetery in Orrville at the convenience of the family.
