Sophia C. Durbin, of Dover and formerly of Bolivar, passed away at the Inn at Northwood in Dover on Saturday morning, May 19, 2018, one day before her 84th birthday.

Born May 20, 1934, Sophia was the daughter of the late David E. and Beatrice C. (Forney) Owens.

After graduating from New Philadelphia High School, Sophia married the late Wesley G. Durbin on Nov. 22, 1956.

Sophia’s professional career included employment at Graef Ford, Klines Potato Chips and ultimately J.C. Penney in Canton, where she retired as an auditor.

Sophia greatly enjoyed her time outdoors gardening. She also had a love for crocheting, sewing her children’s clothing, canning and reading. Most important to her was her role as a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

In her children’s youth, Sophia was a Tusky Valley band booster. She also gave of her time to church activities. However, her grandchildren, and later great-grandchildren, were the pride and joy of her life.

Sophia will be deeply missed by her children including Brenda (Darrell) (Durbin) James of Bolivar, Brian (significant other, Kimberly) Durbin of Canton, Bruce L. (Deborah) Durbin of Bolivar and Bonnie J. (Troy) Link of Bolivar; her grandchildren, Mallory (Joshua), Bryce (close friend, Lisa Marie), Marissa (Dan), Michael (Katlyn), Matthew (Olivia), Jared and Juliana; her great-grandchildren, Elaina Sophia and Caroline Nicole; her sister, Laura (Richard) Haynam of Canton; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover on Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. Pastor Bill Eckert will lead a service celebrating Sophia’s life on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Geib Funeral Center. Burial will follow in East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia.
