Incumbents should have been at Candidates Night

Letter to the Editor:

Shame on U.S. Rep. Anthony Gonzalez and Ohio Rep. Scott Wiggam for not participating in the League of Women Voters’ Meet the Candidate Night on Oct. 6. For years the league’s program has been a premier event in which voters have the opportunity to interact with candidates for local offices and hear their views about issues related to their specific race.

As a voter, I look forward to learning the date of this event and putting it on my calendar. If I were a candidate, clearing my calendar for this important dialogue would be a major priority. Yet Mr. Gonzalez and Mr. Wiggam chose not to do so and denied local voters the important opportunity to learn more about the candidates.

Hooray for their opponents (Aaron Paul Goffrey for U.S. representative and Allison Theiss for Ohio representative) for agreeing to participate. Their willingness to engage voters is commendable and appropriate.
