Time for the Wayne Fair Board to ban Confederate flag

Letter to the Editor:

In this time of new awareness of the horrors that have been visited upon our African American citizens for the past 401 years, NASCAR has finally recognized the Confederate flag is a symbol of this horror. It stands for treason against the United States in order to continue slavery.

If an essentially southern institution like NASCAR can ban the Confederate flag, perhaps it is time for the Wayne County Fair board to ban the Confederate flag from the Wayne County Fair. How can the fair board think it appropriate to welcome a symbol of treason and slavery to the fair?

I have debated this question with the fair board, and they claim it is a matter of freedom of speech. They do not seem to realize freedom of speech is a limited right. It does not allow advocacy of slavery, treason, murder or any of the other criminal actions represented by the Confederate flag.

Now is the time to make the Wayne County Fair welcoming to everyone.
