Lady Knights earn a nice win over Mansfield Senior

West Holmes’ second-singles player Madison Baker took home a 6-2, 6-4 win as part of the Lady Knights’ 4-1 win over Mansfield Senior in tennis action on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at WHHS.

                        

The West Holmes girls tennis team got a much-needed victory over Mansfield Senior on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at WHHS to headline area sports.

WHHS girls tennis rolled to a 4-1 win over the Tygers. At first singles Maggie Taylor earned a 6-1, 6-0 win. At second singles Madison Baker scored a 6-2, 6-4 victory. At third singles Natalie Strouse earned a 6-0, 6-3 win, and at first doubles the team of Aniston Gallion and Rosanna Miller took home a 6-0, 6-3 win.

Cross Country

The Garaway Lady Pirates placed fourth out of 11 teams at the Dover Invitational in the Small School Division. Bethany Rider ended up 13th in 23:58 to lead the way while Megan Weaver was 20th in 24:24.

The Garaway Pirates placed third out of 12 teams at the Dover Invitational in the Large School Division, where Noah Wentworth placed seventh in 18:39, Kristian Stocksdale took eighth in 18:49 and Quinten Schwartz finished 10th in 18:56.

The West Holmes Lady Knights girls cross country team finished seventh out of 13 teams at the Wooster Invite on Saturday, Sept. 14. Scoring for the varsity were Brenna Myers, who placed 30th; Carolyn Miller, who ran 39th; Pacee Miller, who came home in 46th; Sayler Miller, who was right behind in 47th; and Ashly Phillips, who ended up 52nd.

The Knights boys cross country team ran to a third-place finish out of 12 teams at the Wooster Invite. Scoring for the varsity in an all-around team effort were Cade Wagers, who ran seventh; Caiden Carter, who placed 17th; Zander Shultz, who was 25th; Haeden Wolfe, who took 26th; and Zeke Galbraith, who came home in 47th.

Soccer

The West Holmes Knights outlasted a pesky River View squad on the pitch, earning a 3-2 victory. The Knights scored twice in the first half to take a 2-1 lead and then sealed the deal by tying the Black Bears in the second half with one goal apiece.

Jackson Oliver found the back of the net twice for West Holmes to lead the way while Curtis Wagner added a goal for the Knights. River View got scores from Ross Gunn and Bryson Fry.

West Holmes fired off 10 shots on goal to River View’s 14 with Knights’ keeper Brendon Yoder making nine stops on the evening.

The Lady Knights of West Holmes continued their hard play and earned their second victory in a 2-0 whitewash of Philo.

Morgan Stephenson starred in goal for the Lady Knights, producing 14 saves to help stave off a good Electrics’ attack. Offensively Kaylin Martin starred, scoring both of WHHS’s goals, one in each half, which led the way to victory.

In the battle of Holmes County, the Lady Knights gave Hiland a scare before the Lady Hawks pulled out a 2-1 win.

In a spirited contest, Hiland took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute when Paige Gertz located an open Nikki Yoder, who crushed home the game’s initial score. In the 35th minute Mia Gertz scored off an assist from Gabby Schlabach, and Hiland held a 2-0 halftime lead.

Neither team found a lot of success in the second half as Stephenson and Hiland keeper Kendra Shetler and the Lady Hawks defense were being quite stingy in goal, but in the 70th minute freshman Sydney Krownapple gave the Lady Knights hope by squirting one through.

That would be the end of the scoring as Hiland improved its record to 5-1.

“It was good to get a win, but we should have scored on more of the opportunities we created,” Hiland coach Conner Lee said. “Credit to Morgan Stephenson. She had a great game.”

The numbers flesh out Stephenson’s prowess in net, where she corralled 17 saves, with Hiland outshooting West Holmes 28-2.

WHHS would rally to defeat Ridgewood by a 4-2 count. Martin remained red hot for the Lady Knights, knocking home three goals, while Katrina Rolince added a single tally. Liberty Arnold and Ally Ogi each picked up an assist as West Holmes improved to 3-5.

The Lady Hawks would then go on to club Canton Central Catholic 4-1. Mia Gertz had a goal and two assists, Maici Money added a goal and an assist, Kate Kaufman and Kara Kornhaus each added a goal, and Melody Murdaugh chipped in with an assist as Hiland improved to 6-1.

Volleyball

The West Holmes Lady Knights fell to a stout Northwest team by a 3-0 count. Lauren Jones recorded 16 assists and three service aces; Harmony Mast had three aces and 39 digs; Negan Jones recorded four blocks, 26 digs, 10 kills and two serving aces; Nadia Rouse added 30 digs; Brynlee Reed had 10 assists; and Hannah Rohr added five kills for the Lady Knights.

In a huge win for the Garaway Lady Pirates, Jess Schwartz’s young crew toppled a good Indian Valley team 3-2. Garaway took game one 25-23, fell in the next two contests by scores of 25-17 and 25-21, and stormed back to take game four 25-21 and then in the quick game to 15 seized control and rode momentum to a 15-9 match-clinching win.

In the victory Lizzie Mullet churned out 33 assists and two service aces; Brooklyn Frey had a strong all-around game with 13 kills, 40 digs and seven assists; and Brooke Werker added 39 digs, 11 kills and two assists.

Garaway then dropped a heartbreaker to Buckeye Trail, falling in five games 25-17, 19-25, 22-25, 25-21, 15-11. In the contest Meghan Petitte scored six kills, 13 digs, one block and three aces; Laiken Wallick added 8 kills, 10 digs and two aces; Werker recorded eight kills; Frey had six kills and a block; and Mullet doled out 29 assists.

The Lady Hawks reeled off three nice victories last week, all in 3-0 fashion. Hiland rolled a rugged Claymont squad 25-20, 25-18, 25-21, then topped Newcomerstown 25-11, 25-18, 25-11.

The third win came courtesy of a close-fought 25-22, 26-24, 25-14 win over Buckeye Trail.

Golf

The Garaway Pirates placed third at the Wooster Invite at Wooster Country Club on Monday, Sept. 9. New Albany won with a score of 306 with the Pirates lurking not far back in third at 317.

Zehnder Gibson fired off a stellar round of 75, followed by Rendall Weaver and Charles Beachy, both of whom shot 80. Ethan Miller rounded out the scoring by posting an 82.

West Holmes fell to Lexington on the links 166-189. In the loss Hunter Ellis led the way with a 43, Cody Miller added a 45, and Brice Hunter and Brody Allen each carded 51s for the Knights.

Hiland’s golf team continued to roll, pounding visiting Tusky Valley at Fore Ridge Golf Course 147-191.

In the victory Carter Mishler’s strong play continued as the sophomore fired a one-under-par 35. He was followed by Dylan Kaufman and Bruce Yoder, who each carded 37s; Brookston Hummel’s 38; and Kenny Weaver’s 41. Garrett Shoup rounded out the scoring with a 43.

The Hawks also got a win at Salt Fork Golf Course, where they toppled Malvern and Buckeye Trail 149-186-186 in a tri-match. Mishler’s 36 led the way with Kaufman and Hummel adding matching 37s, Yoder carding a 39, Weaver tacking on a 41, and Shoup adding a 42.
