With plenty of competition in John Glenn, Sandy Valley, Carrollton and others, the Garaway Pirates knew it would take a strong effort to carve out a sectional gold crown at River Greens Golf Course on Monday, Sept, 23.

The Pirates got the effort they expected and wowed the field with a victorious 303 that easily topped the rest of the field. John Glenn was runner-up with a very good 321.

Zehnder Gibson and Rendall Weaver fired off matching 71s that earned them co-medalist honors while Mikey Blauch added an 80 and Ethan Miller tacked on an 81 for the victors.

The win puts the Pirates in the driver’s seat as the top-four teams will now battle at districts at Eagle Sticks Golf Course in Zanesville for the right to move on to the state tournament.

In what has become a trending occurrence, the Hiland Hawks and Garaway Pirates battled to the top-two spots at the Eastern District Golf Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 21, an event that featured 17 teams tackling the River Greens Golf Course in West Lafayette.

As has been the case in the past, it would be the Hawks earning a win, going sub-300 with a score of 298. The Pirates would take the runner-up spot with a score of 310, fending off Dover’s third-place finish at 317.

Tornadoes senior Gabe Miller earned medalist honors with a one-under-par 71, but it would be Hiland’s depth that would propel the Hawks to victory.

Dylan Kaufman fired off a 72 as Hiland’s medalist with Carter Mishler right behind him at 73. Brookston Hummel added a 75 while Bruce Yoder and Kenny Weaver each contributed 78 to the round.

Garaway was paced by a resurgent Ethan Miller, who fired a strong 76, while Rendall Weaver added a 77, Zehnder Gibson shot a 78, Charles Beachy carded a 79 and Mikey Blauch added an 82.

West Holmes placed sixth in the Ohio Cardinal Conference Championship, but it turned into a great day for Hunter Ellis. The Knights sophomore fired an 83, a score that placed him on the First Team All-OCC team this fall.

“Hunter has just been rock solid each night out,” West Holmes head coach Mike Molnar said. “He has led our team in scoring every match. He has had a great season, and we have a lot of young talent coming up, especially in our junior high program, so we expect some good things in the future.”

Speaking of the youngsters, WHMS placed third out of 11 teams at the Middle School Post Season Tournament. Garaway took the top honor with a 316, followed by Dover’s 325 and West Holmes’ 341.

Knights’ Trey Baker was the tourney medalist with a score of 71 while Grady Toye added a 75 and Kenzie Woods carded an 87.

The varsity Knights placed 14th at the State Farm Invitational at Riceland Golf Course. Hunter Ellis shot an 87 while Brody Allen carded a career-best 89. Brice Hunter shot a 96.
