Bond and T. Adkins post first Hilltop wins

With the hottest temperatures of the year and Supermoon in the sky, it was another night of excellent racing at Hilltop Speedway as dash winner Wayne Maffett Jr. led the way for the Holmes Tire Late Models for the first lap before Ryan Markham took over. They would go side by side for the next two laps before Markham secured the lead and Mansfield’s Rick Bond would challenge Maffett Jr. for second following a lap four caution for Charlie Duncan. Using the high groove, Bond pulled away from Maffett Jr. and set sail for Markham as Dzugan Fire & Rescue Fast Qualifier JR Gentry, Dave Hornikel and Brad Malcuit worked on Maffett Jr. for third. Gentry would take third on lap 11 and pressured Bond for second, who was doing the same to Markham for the lead. With 10 laps to go, mechanical issues sidelined Maffett Jr. as Duncan had worked his way back up to race Malcuit for fifth. At the five lap to go mark, Bond and Gentry were hot on Markham’s tail with Hornikel, Malcuit and Duncan battling for third. Coming out of turn four to complete lap 22, Markham spun to bring out the yellow flag as everyone was able to avoid hitting him. Markham pulled off as did heat winner Hornikel before the green flag flew again. On the restart with Bond leading and Gentry in second, Duncan slipped past Malcuit for third. Trying to grab the lead, Gentry went highside to get past Bond but bounced off the wall coming out of turn four with two laps to go and that allowed Bond some breathing room as Duncan and Malcuit moved past Gentry. Bond and his Eddleblute’s Garage, Donaldson Law Offices and Bond’s Septic Service #007 would pull into victory lane for the first time this season as Duncan took second ahead of Malcuit and Gentry. Vic Hottinger took fifth in his first start in a Late Model at Hilltop. Norm Aronhalt beat dash winner Jimmy Smith into turn one and would never look back to win his third Raceday Photo Modified feature aboard the Warsaw based Service Welding and Dari Hut # 309. Smith ran second for most of the race as fast qualifier Kevin Morehouse worked on him and with five laps to go, Morehouse powered past Smith for second but could not catch up to Aronhalt. As Smith finished third, Robin Duston took home fourth, his seventh straight top 10 finish as points leader John Sluka edged out Bruce Miller for fifth. Chris Basich and Rory Reed pocketed the heat wins. All season long, the Street Stocks have been the most highly competitive class at Hilltop Speedway and it continued that way as Kyle Moore won the dash to start on the pole but it was Bob Daugherty leading the feature on the opening lap and going into turn one on the second lap, Kyle Dickinson spun trying to get by Daugherty, to bring out the yellow flag. Daugherty gave up the lead to Moore on lap five and he would set the pace for the next four laps when he banged off the wall and Brandon Gardner of Miamisburg, who just took second from Daugherty, took control. All of this time there was a three car battle for third between Ryan Wisecarver, Bob Chilcote and Kyle Cline, as Dickinson was working his way back up to the front. With the Schaeffer Oil, RDL, and Innovative Graphics #27g of Gardner inching away and headed for victory circle for the fifth time this year, Moore and Wisecarver dueled for second but Moore again bounced off the wall and dropped back to fifth as Daugherty and Dickinson both got by to finish third and fourth. Moore, Daugherty and Dickinson scored the heat wins. It has not been a good year for Terry Adkins as the defending track champion has posted only three top tens this year in the Thompson’s Garage Mini Stocks but he would muscle past fellow heat winners Brad and Gary Hensel Jr. on the opening lap and then drive away from them the rest of the way to collect his first win of the season aboard the Loudonville Tire #23d. It was a hotly contested race for second as five-time winner Jordan James sliced and diced with the Hensels for second but had to settle for fourth after tagging the wall in turn three to allow Gary Hensel Jr. to grab second with Brad Hensel getting third at the line. Jason St. John worked his way through the field from his 16th starting spot to take fifth. Galena’s Rolly Heyder repeated his win from two weeks ago as he went flag to flag again to win his second Bugs-R-Gone Truck feature aboard the Jack Maxton Chevrolet and Nichels Towing #10. John Large, who was the other heat winner with Heyder, ran second as it was beating and banging for the rest of the top five between Kevin Potts, David Potts, Travis Winterringer, Kevin Davis and five-time winner Cole Lillibridge as they all swapped positions lap after lap. At the checkered flag following Heyder and Large, it was David Potts, points leader Kevin Potts and Winterringer. The Modlites rolled into Hilltop Speedway for the second time this season and Zanesville’s Tracy Fritter made it two for two as he led from the drop of the green flag. Tyler Frankenberry edged past Brian Stuhldreher on the last lap for second as Chris Logan and Wayne Kintz rounded out the top five. Fritter and his #59 machine and Stuhldreher won the heats. The Modlites will return to Hilltop Speedway on Saturday, July 6. For the second week in a row, the girls ruled the Mike’s Service Mini Wedge’s as Coshocton’s Destinie Bates won the A-1 feature for the second straight week. Phil Bubeck was the leader for the first two laps but Bates and her A&B Roofing and Construction, Coshocton Moose Lodge #935 and Elliott’s Excavating #500 took over at that point and won her second A-1 main of the season. Bubeck and Blake Morris flip-flopped second the last three laps with Morris winning over that spot as Brooke Dawson finished fourth in front of Logan Duncan. Taylor Huggins passed Tristen Brown on the last lap of the A-2 feature for the win aboard the John’s Lawn Care and Glen’s Sales & Service #99h to make it an all-girls victory lane. Brown edged out Hannah Rose for second as Brayden Renfrew and Braxton Wilson filled out the top five. Bubeck, Bates and Karyssa Beagle topped the heat races. Double action next weekend at Hilltop Speedway as the Ohio Outlaw Motorsports take over on Friday night with quads and motorcycles doing the entertaining and then a regular night of racing on Saturday night with all six divisions in action.
