West Holmes football’s regular-season winning streak ends
The West Holmes football team’s 23-game regular-season winning streak came to an end with a 40-35 nonleague loss at Licking Valley on Sept. 1.
The Knights led 20-19 at halftime but were outscored 15-8 in the third quarter, which proved to be the difference.
WH quarterback Morgan Smith and wide receiver Logan Zollars had record-setting games in the loss. Smith completed 24 of 31 passes for a school-record 553 yards and four touchdowns, breaking Bridger Cline’s mark of 444, set in 2018 against Ashland. Zollars, meanwhile, hauled in 11 passes for a school-record 269 yards and a touchdown, breaking Brady Taylor’s mark of 254, set in 2020 against Padua Franciscan.
Nate Fair caught three passes for 130 yards and two scores, Kyle Maltarich snagged three balls for 66 yards and a touchdown, and Lynn Cline hauled in four balls for 55 yards. Zach Shepler paced the rushing attack with 58 yards and a score on 10 carries.
The Knights outgained Licking Valley by over 200 yards of total offense (610 to 396), but they were penalized 13 times for 91 yards compared to LV’s seven for 36.
Cline and Graham Martin (sack) had nine tackles each to lead WH’s defense. Fair, Grant Miller and Gus Warner all recorded seven tackles.
Girls golf
Competing as an individual, Kenzie Woods fired a 1-over-par 73 to earn medalist honors at the Ohio Cardinal Conference Round 2 Tournament at Deer Ridge Golf Course on Aug. 31.
Memphis Jones also competed for the Lady Knights, carding a 130.
Boys golf
West Holmes shot a 362 to finish seventh at the OCC Round 2 Tournament at Deer Ridge Golf Course on Aug. 31.
Grady Toye led the Knights with an 85 and was followed by Trey Baker (88), Zane Kinsey (92) and Maverick Rickly (97).
West Holmes defeated Waynedale 167-174 in a nonleague match on Aug. 30.
Baker earned medalist honors with an even-par 36. Kenzie Woods added a 40, Toye a 44 and Connor Burchfield a 47.
Girls tennis
West Holmes picked up a 4-1 win over New Philadelphia in OCC action on Sept. 5.
Arora Chaney won 6-3, 6-0 at first singles, and Brylie Rickly won 6-4, 6-1 at third singles. The first doubles team of Nadia Chaney and Zariah Troyer won 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 while the second doubles tandem of Kylee Taylor and Kara Wade won 6-3, 6-4.
In JV action the doubles team of Emily Manges and Claire Drzazga won 6-2.
West Holmes cruised to a 5-0 win over Mansfield Senior in OCC play on Aug. 31.
Arora Chaney won 6-3, 6-1 at first singles; Cuylee Troyer won 6-3, 6-1 at second singles; and Rickly won 6-0, 6-0 at third singles. The Lady Knights won both doubles matches by default.
Girls soccer
West Holmes rolled to a 4-0 nonleague win over Tusky Valley on Sept. 2.
Charli Murphy scored twice to lead WH while Avery Arnold and Allie McMillen added one goal each. McMillen also dished out two assists, and Murphy and Arnold had one assist. Goalie Bre Parks finished with nine saves.
Wooster scored three times in the second half to net a 3-0 win over West Holmes in OCC action on Aug. 31.
Volleyball
West Holmes suffered a 25-22, 25-15, 25-12 loss to Mount Vernon in OCC play on Sept. 5.
Zaylie Shultz (eight kills, six digs), Allie Snyder (five kills, 16 digs), Maggie Ryan (18 assists, two aces, four digs), Brooklyn Lydic (four kills) and Sophie Oliver (14 digs, two aces) led the Lady Knights.
Triway picked up a 25-16, 25-18, 25-11 nonleague win over West Holmes on Sept. 2.
Shultz (seven kills, 13 digs), Snyder (six kills, eight digs, two aces) and Oliver (15 digs, two aces) paced the Lady Knights.
New Philadelphia defeated West Holmes in straight sets — 25-14, 25-14, 25-19 — in an OCC clash on Aug. 31.
The Lady Knights were led by Greta Rolince (six kills, three digs, two blocks), Snyder (five kills, 14 digs), Lydic (two kills, block), Shultz (two kills, six digs) and Ryan (13 assists, seven digs).
Boys soccer
New Philadelphia picked up a 10-0 win over West Holmes in an OCC battle on Sept. 5.
Tied 1-all at halftime, Crestview scored three times in the second half to pull out a 4-2 nonleague win over West Holmes on Aug. 31.
Garrett Obrst scored on a penalty kick to get the Knights on the board, and Alex Pringle scored on a free kick with 4:23 left in the game for their other goal.
Seventh-grade football
WH’s defense pitched a shutout in the second half to earn a 12-12 tie against Ashland on Aug. 30.
Silas Baker and Hudson Flanders rushed for touchdowns on the Knights’ final two drives while Eb Al-Sultan had a key interception on defense.
Eighth-grade football
Ashland rolled to a 35-6 win over West Holmes in OCC action on Aug. 30.
Rhett Chaney threw a long touchdown pass to Marshall Yoder for WH’s lone score.
