The College of Wooster’s Cole Hissong’s play on the gridiron last fall didn’t go unnoticed at the national level as D3football.com selected the junior tight end as a first-team preseason All-American recently. The popular website dedicated to coverage of NCAA Div. III football went ahead and recognized the top players at each position who were projected to return when the fall football season was canceled.

Hissong, a Triway High grad and one of the most improved players in the region in 2019, earned a spot on D3football.com’s All-North Region second team and debuted on the All-North Coast Athletic Conference squad as a first-team honoree. The education and history double major ranked fifth in the NCAC with 527 yards receiving last year and tied for fifth with five touchdowns. The Shreve native’s signature outing came at DePauw University, where he turned seven receptions into a career-high 194 yards and two touchdowns. Hissong’s 194 yards from that outing are the sixth-most in single-game program history.

Hissong logged a second multi-touchdown day at Kenyon College when he turned four receptions into 94 yards and two scores. In 2019 Hissong logged five games with at least four receptions and four games with at least 50 yards.

Hissong’s selection marks the second time in the last three years Wooster has had a D3football.com preseason All-American. Alumnus Nick Strausbaugh, arguably the top wide receiver in program history, was a second-team selection in 2018. Earlier this summer Hissong was a Street & Smith’s College FootballPreseason All-American.
