Parasite management workshop for sheep and goats

A small ruminant parasite management workshop June 29 will be hosted by Roman J. Miller from noon to 5 p.m. The Ohio Heartland Sheep Improvement Association and Small Farm Institute are sponsoring this hands-on workshop. Parasites are the major killer of sheep and goats. The available dewormers are losing their effectiveness as the parasites become more resistant to the deworming medicine. This workshop will cover all aspects of parasite management, including good deworming practices, how to decrease parasite loads on pasture, and how to use the FAMACHA eye card to identify animals requiring deworming. Dr. William Shulaw will be the instructor for the workshop. He is an Ohio State University Extension veterinarian and an expert on parasite management in small ruminants. Each farm participating will receive a FAMACHA eye card. Individuals attending the workshop will need to come in clean clothes that have not been in the barn since laundering. The workshop location is 8190 TR 656, Fredericksburg. For more information, call Kathy Bielek at 330-264-5281 after 5 p.m., or Small Farm Institute at 740-545-6349.
