Tuscarawas County 2014 Pork Producers Banquet
The 2014 queen and princess were crowned and several board members were elected at the 2014 Tuscarawas County Pork Producers annual banquet, held March 17 in the Union Hill United Methodist Church in Sugarcreek.
Maddy Schupp, 14, the daughter of Todd and Jackie Schupp of New Philadelphia, was crowned queen. Roy and Holly Harrolds daughter, Tessa Harrold, 10, of Dover, was crowned princess.
Schupp is no stranger to the royal court, having served as the 2013 Tuscarawas County Pork Producers Princess. She has been a member of Buckhorn Buckshots 4-H Club for nine years and is also a three-year member of Safe Shots 4-H Club. This is the fourth year Schupp has taken a 4-H market hog project and the second year for a market turkey project.
The new queen is a freshman at Indian Valley High School where she is a member of the concert band, marching band and color guard. She also belongs to the Indian Valley FFA. She is a member of Sharon Moravian Church and its brass choir.
My year as the 2013 Tuscarawas County Pork Producer Princess was a wonderful experience, she said. I have so many great memories shared with the 2013 queen, Morgan Woodhall. We have become like sisters with each other, along with the other Tuscarawas County agriculture royalty.
My week at the 2013 fair was so busy but so rewarding. I helped with the pork producers trailer, the hog show, hog showmanship event and livestock sales.
In addition, I helped Barb Airgood, the 4-H Tuscarawas County Extension educator, with the Grow Your Pig and Sell Your Pig Project. We taught people how much money it takes to raise your pig and sell it, hopefully for a profit. We also helped her with this at the Forest Heritage Festival. The queens supper was great and altogether, I attended more than 35 special events last year, including fairs and parades.
This year, I am excited to be chosen the 2014 Tuscarawas County Pork Producer Queen, and I will have the chance to spend my reign with the 2014 Tuscarawas County Pork Producer Princess, Tessa Harrold. I feel that Tessa and I will make a lot of great memories and be a great pair together.
Tessa and I are looking forward to attending a lot of local events, fairs and parades, along with the other Tuscarawas County agriculture royalty (dairy, beef and fair). We would like to educate as many people as possible about the pork industry and agriculture.
We would also like to take part in the Read to Kids at local schools, libraries and other events just to give back to our community.
Most of all, I would like to say thank you to the Tuscarawas County Pork Producers for supporting me and giving me so many wonderful memories.
Harrold, the new princess, is a fifth-grader at Dover South Elementary School and attends Union Hill United Methodist Church. This is her third year in 4-H and she has taken a market hog and market steer project each year as a member of Brandywine 4-H Club. She was president of the club last year.
Harrold has two pet pygmy goats and the family owns four horses. She is taking riding lessons from Hunter Ridge Farm.
I am excited to have been chosen the 2014 Tuscarawas County Pork Producer Princess because I want to share my knowledge with others, she said. There are many people who do not understand where their food comes from and how it is raised and I would like to teach them. I want to reach as many kids as possible to encourage them to explore 4-H and agriculture.
This year, along with the 2014 Tuscarawas County Pork Industry Queen, Maddy Schupp, I will have great opportunities to share my knowledge as we plan on attending as many parades, festivals and community events as possible.
Jamie Beaber, whose sister was the 2009 Tuscarawas County Pork Industry Queen, was in charge of the contest.
Beaber, Courtney Spillman and Wynn Miller were elected to the board of directors. The other directors are Rod Endsley and Sue Canfield.
Scholarships will be awarded to 17 Tuscarawas County high school or college students pursuing a degree in agriculture or a related field.
