The 2019 Tuscarawas County Fair will kick off Sunday, Sept. 15 at 6:30 p.m. with the announcement of the new fair king and queen.

The 2018 Tuscarawas County Fair king and queen, Carlo Capozella and Makayla Miller, will end their reign when they crown the 2019 fair royalty.

Contestants for queen are Alayna Long, 18, a student at Indian Valley High School; Justine Hershberger, 16, a student at Garaway High School; Madison DeVault, 16, a student at Dover High School; Mikayla Horn, 18, a student at Ashland University; Megan Murphy, 17, a student at Tusky Valley High School and Stark State College; and Vidalia Porter, 17, a student at Strasburg High School.

Contestants for king are Alexander Allen, 16, a student at Tusky Valley High School and Buckeye Career Center, and Justin Scott, 18, a student at Indian Valley High School.

At 7 p.m. the annual plate auction will be held. Individuals, organizations and businesses are welcome to join the bidding.

This year’s plate features four scenes of hay, wheat, green beans and corn for the 169th county fair. The first 10 plates will be auctioned off to support the fair. The number-one plate was purchased last year for $500 by Tango & Gatti Inc.

The number-11 plate, which supports the fair royalty program, also went to Tango & Gatti Inc. for $825 last year. Though the company has supported the livestock auctions in the past, 2018 was the first year they participated in the plate auction.

The remaining plates will be for sale at the fair board office.

The Quilts of Valor Under Our Wings program also will present four or more quilts to area veterans during the Sunday evening program. The program began nationally in 2003 as a grassroots effort. A quilter named Catherine Roberts had the idea of comforting veterans with quilts while her son was serving in Iraq.

The goal of the Under Our Wings program is to inspire youth to give back to their communities while fostering citizenship, according to Chris Kendle of the OSU Extension Office.

Other awards to 4-H members will be presented including those for companion animal, miscellaneous and FCS project winners after the plate auction.
