As Bright Life Players was deciding options for its 2022 spring production, the group wanted to consider a play from the Christian Theater Publications company it used for the successful musical, "Esther." This choice of "Pilgrim Her Story" seemed the perfect project.

Kay Anderson is artistic director for the play, which will be presented March 4-6 and 11-13 at the First Church of God, 1953 Akron Road, Wooster. This production is the ninth project for Bright Life Players as they live out the mission of providing family entertainment and supporting local charities that benefit the community.

"Pilgrim Her Story" is a contemporary musical based on "The Pilgrim’s Progress" by John Bunyan. "The Pilgrim’s Progress" is told from the narrator’s (Curt Stambaugh) perspective, as if he were in a dream. In this dream he tells the story of Christian, a man who lives in the City of Destruction. One day Christian is awakened to the realities of sin and judgment on his life, symbolized by a heavy burden he carries on his back. He encounters a spiritual guide named Evangelist (Hannah Caskey), who sets him on the path to salvation. He must first travel to the Wicket Gate and then on to the Celestial City. Christian will be played by a woman (Katie Foxx).

“The music represents several different styles, and the lyrics are very rich in meaning,” said Maggie Leatherman, musical director.

The cast of "Pilgrim Her Story" ranges from first grade to high school students from throughout the area, as well as some homeschooled students and adults.

“'Pilgrim Her Story' uses a lot of humor to convey the original message of Bunyan’s book. We believe it will be enjoyed by all ages," cast member Melissa Davis said.

Behind the scenes are Lori Mae Reynolds (costumes), Ron Leatherman and Allie Anderson (sound and lights), Sandy Streit (assistant director), and many others. Bright Life Players is always grateful to the First Church of God for the use of the building.

Show dates are March 4, 5, 11 and 12 at 7 p.m. and March 13 at 2:30 p.m. Purchase tickets at the door or at www.brightlifeplayers.org. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for age 12 and under, and $30 for a family four-pack.
