‘Glass Menagerie’ auditions are Sunday and Monday
Auditions for The Little Theatre of Tuscarawas County’s 2023 summer Black Box production of Tennessee Williams’ “The Glass Menagerie” will be held Sunday and Monday, July 2 and 3 at the theater at 6:30 p.m. Registration will begin at 6 p.m. If necessary, callbacks will be held Wednesday, July 5.
Director Sarah Spies said those interested in auditioning will be asked to read from selected scene cuttings available online, in addition to other cold readings from the script.
Actors are expected to be familiar with the cutting shared, but memorization is not necessary. Details about this show and more can be found at www.thelittletheatreonline.org or The Little Theatre of Tuscarawas County’s Facebook page. Questions should be emailed to sarahjanespies@gmail.com.
Spies will cast four characters. Faded Southern belle, Amanda Wingfield, born into a prominent Southern family, has suffered a reversal of economic and social misfortunes and is having a hard time coming to terms with it. A proud vivacious woman, Amanda clings fervently to memories of a vanished genteel past. She is simultaneously admirable, charming, pitiable and laughable.
Amanda’s daughter Laura has a bad leg. She wears a brace and walks with limp. At 23 years old, she is painfully shy and has withdrawn from the outside world to devote herself to old records and her collection of glass figurines. She is considered odd.
Laura’s brother Tom works at a shoe warehouse to support the family. He is frustrated by the routine of his job and escapes from it through movies, literature and alcohol. He is thought to represent Williams in his real life as the play is semi-autobiographical.
A high school acquaintance of Tom and Laura was a popular athlete and is now a shipping clerk at the shoe warehouse in which Tom works. He is devoted to goals of professional achievement and ideals of personal success and is responsible for unintentional chaos when he re-enters the lives of the Wingfields.
Rehearsals will begin Monday, July 10 with the location to be announced. The show is sponsored by Andrew, Kait and Eliza Wilsterman.
“The Glass Menagerie” will open Thursday, Aug. 17 and run Aug. 18, 19, 20, 24, 25, 26 and 27.
The Little Theatre of Tuscarawas County is located at 466 Carrie Ave. NW in New Philadelphia.
