HCA hosting several art classes, workshops this fall
Holmes Center for the Arts will host several classes and workshops this fall.
—Home school art with Karen Drongowski for elementary students will be Thursdays, Aug. 31; Sept. 7, 14, 21 and 28; and Oct. 5, 12 and 19 from 9:30-11 a.m. for $120. Attendees will explore a variety of 2- and 3-D art techniques inspired by famous artists or art movements. All materials are provided.
—Home school art with Cathie Lynch and Naomi Shumway for middle school and high school students will be Thursdays, Aug. 31; Sept. 7, 14, 21 and 28; and Oct. 5, 12 and 19 from 9:30-11 a.m. for $120. Students will work with traditional drawing and painting techniques for the first four weeks with Lynch, then will switch gears to digital art techniques for the last four weeks with Shumway. Students are encouraged to have a sketchbook for the first session. Students will work on iPad Pro (provided by an Appalachian Ohio Foundation Grant) for the second session.
—Digital art with Michelle Richey for kids age 9 and up will be Tuesdays from 4-5 p.m. for $45 per session (limit 10 students). Session one will take place Sept. 5, 12, 19 and 26. Session two will take place Oct. 3, 10, 17 and 24. Attendees will learn to create with iPad Pro. Students will use Procreate to master basic digital art methods using tools, layers and the color wheel.
—Digital art for adult beginners with Richey will be Tuesdays from 5-6 p.m. for $45 per session (limit 10 students). Session one will take place Sept. 5, 12, 19 and 26. Session two will take place Oct. 3, 10, 17 and 24. Attendees will learn to create artwork on iPad Pro using Procreate. Artwork can be reproduced on T-shirts as cards and in many other ways. No experience is necessary.
—After-school art with Drongowski for first grade through fifth grade will be Wednesdays from 4:15-5:15 p.m. for $45 per session. Session one will take place Sept. 6, 13, 20 and 27. Session two will take place Oct. 4, 11, 18 and 25. These four-week sessions are inspired by famous artists or by an element of design. Each child will complete a drawing, a painting, a collage and a print in each class. Projects will be different in each session. All materials are included.
—Wednesday evening art with Drongowski for teens and adults will be Wednesdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m. for $40 per session. Session one will take place Sept. 6, 13, 20 and 27. Session two will take place Oct. 4, 11, 18 and 25. Attendees will learn different styles of art including painting, drawing and printmaking, plus some art history. No experience is necessary.
—Adult art with Drongowski will be Thursdays from noon to 1:30 p.m. for $60 per session or $15 per class. Session one will take place Sept. 7, 14, 21 and 28. Session two will take place Oct. 5, 12, 19 and 26. Attendees will learn different styles of art including painting, drawing and printmaking, plus some art history. No experience is necessary.
—Mixed media oil painting workshop with Marlea Hershberger-Leinbach for teens and adults will be Friday, Sept. 8 from 6-7:30 p.m. for $25. Attendees will explore oils and cold wax medium to create textures and translucent layers with their own oil paints, brushes and palettes. All other materials will be supplied.
—Digital art for tweens and teens with Addie White will be Saturdays from 10-11 a.m. for $45 per session (limit 10 students). Session one will take place Sept. 9, 16, 23 and 30. Session two will take place Nov. 4, 11 and 18 and Dec. 2. Attendees will learn the ins and outs of digital art using Procreate on iPad Pro. Students will use different tools and layers and work with the color wheel.
—Hand-building clay techniques with Hershberger-Leinbach for teens and adults (beginners) will be Mondays, Sept. 11, 18 and 25 from 4-6 p.m. for $60, plus a $20 supply fee. Attendees will do hand-building with slabs and texture. Students will design and build a ceramic incense burner or lantern.
—Sustainable styles for teens and adults with Frankie Schlabach will be Saturdays, Sept. 9, 16 and 30 and Oct. 7 and 14 from 12:30-2 p.m. for $75. Attendees will personalize thrift store finds. Classes will feature sneaker painting, customized denim and jewelry upcycling.
—Acrylic paint and sip with Drongowski for teens and adults will be Friday, Sept. 15 from 6-7:30 p.m. for $25.
—Watercolor class with Michelle Steffen for teens and adults will be Fridays, Sept. 22, Oct. 20 and Nov. 17 from 6-7:30 p.m. for $55. This three-week introductory watercolor course is as follows: day one, Let’s play, materials, color mixing and painting techniques; day two, Fall Folly, shapes, edges, lines and negative painting; and day three, All Together Now, composition and application of techniques. Students should purchase a small watercolor set. Steffen recommends Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolor paint set (field set) and an XL multimedia sketchbook to practice activities at home. Other materials will be provided.
—Silk scarf dying with Leslie McKelly for teens and adults (limit six) will be Friday, Sept. 29 from 6-7:30 p.m. for $15, plus a $10 materials fee. Attendees will create a hand-dyed silk scarf.

—Autumn leaf printing with Drongowski for teens and adults will be Friday, Oct. 13 from 6-7:30 p.m. for $20. Attendees will celebrate autumn by making leaf prints without a press. This is a new technique using gelli plates.
—Poetry, the sounds of language with Jennifer McCluggage for teens and adults will be Friday, Oct. 27 from 6-7:30 p.m. for $15. Attendees will explore the deliberate use of sound to add to the emotional impact of writing. Students will examine line breaks and read several different poems to see the effect of form on tone. Participants will draft original work and will have the opportunity to share it aloud if they wish. They will learn artistic ways to present their writings. Materials needed include a notebook and a pencil/pen.
—Wheel throwing ceramics with Eric Yoder will be Tuesdays, Oct. 31; Nov. 7, 14, 21 and 28; and Dec. 5 and 12 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. for $150, plus a $30 supply fee. This seven-week course is for beginners through advanced. Attendees can make their own Christmas gifts.
—Felted elf or Mr. or Mrs. Claus with Lydia Johnson for age 12 and up will be Friday, Nov. 3 from 6-7:30 p.m. for $15, plus $10 for a supply kit. Attendees will create a felted elf or Mr. or Mrs. Claus just in time for the holidays.
—Alcohol ink exploration with Drongowski for teens and adults will be Friday, Nov. 10 from 6-7:30 p.m. for $25. Attendees will explore this new medium using a variety of surfaces including paper, canvas and tile. No experience is necessary.
—Fraktur, holiday-Christmas workshop with Hershberger-Leinbach will be Saturday, Nov. 18 from 1-3:30 p.m. Attendees will learn the elaborate folk art created by the Pennsylvania Dutch and will create their own reproducible Christmas card or simply practice this art form.
