The Wayne Center for the Arts dance department announced the culminating performance of its “New Works” project, featuring new choreography by nine choreographers in styles from classical to modern.

The performance will take place Saturday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. in the WCA auditorium. Tickets are on sale at www.wayneartscenter.org or may be reserved by calling 330-264-2787 or in person at Wayne Center for the Arts, 237 S. Walnut St., Wooster. Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $10 for students or seniors.

Auditions for this performance took place in early January, resulting in a quick rehearsal schedule of less than a month before the debut performance. The project grew out of a desire to expose dancers to a variety of teaching styles and fresh patterns of movement.

Artistic director Brian Murphy feels strongly that opportunities to work with a variety of teachers are "essential for a dancer's growth." Many pieces in this performance feature dancers at multiple levels working together, another challenge Murphy feels helps dancers to develop and think creatively.

This year’s choreographers include Juliana Freude of Neos Dance Theatre; Lieneke Matte and Kate Webb of Verb Ballets; Regina Pietraroia, owner and director of Dance Arts by Regina; and WCA dance faculty, Ethan Michael Lee, Brian Murphy, Kimberly Payne, Kaitlin Shrekhise and Lauren Stenroos. Each choreographer also is developing the costuming for his/her own work, resulting in a variety of innovative visual effects.

Wayne Center for the Arts is an arts nonprofit in Wooster, dedicated to “enriching lives and strengthening communities through art.”
