Summer fun right around the corner as school draws to a close

Ahhh, the final days of school... there ain’t nuthin’ like ‘em. I can use words that aren’t truly words like that in this blog because as most of you probably already know, school is coming to an end... at least for the summer. Every year about this time, summer sun ushers in summer fun, and there are all kinds of exciting options waiting with every rising sun. However, before that happens, those final few school days must tick away, and they tend to drag on and on, seemingly with no end in sight, as the classroom clock ticks slower and slower until the second hand seems to hover, then magically move backwards. However, miraculously, those final days, in which kids have only a tiny bit of interest in paying attention, and when free-floating clouds, whispers down the hall or the whisper of the classroom fan can draw one’s attention away form thoughts of studying, fade away, ushering in a new and bright season. That season is summer vacation, and the joys it brings abound. First off, every summer usually means summer vacation, with destinations like some exotic beach down south or trips to bigger cities call. Even if vacations can be hectic, the frenetic pace is nothing compared to that of school. Then there are those closer-to-home trips, to the water park, or to ball games, maybe to see a movie, or shopping or to an Akron Aeros baseball game. Those are the types of events which make up a portion of any summer vacation. But perhaps the best part of vacation is simply hanging out doing nothing. Relaxing on the deck or patio, or sitting with friends around the late-night fire, knowing you can stay up later because there is no 6:10 a.m. alarm coming — not this time. No, summer vacation is that one time when you can forget all your troubles at school and let loose. There are no text books to struggle through, no ear-piercing bells to tell you what you need to be doing next, and if you want to eat ice cream at 2 o’clock in the afternoon, who is to stop you? Nobody! Suddenly, the classroom cell seems so far away, as if it never really existed at all. Yes, summer vacation is truly one of those prized times when all of the cares of the world are seemingly released, and you get to do what you want to do. For a school teacher, there is no more sacred time. What, you thought this was about the kids? Nah, it’s just another day in the life for them. Criminy, kids got it made! Summer to them is just business as usual, only hotter. Sure, they treasure summer vacation, but not like a teacher does. For teachers, summer vacation is Nirvana; a little three-month slice of heaven; their own personal Garden of Eden-type thing. It will end soon enough, but for about 80 glorious days, there are no dirty-fingered cling-ons, no bickering fights to break up, no explaining things over and over and over, no "so and-so called me a bad name”, no beating your skull against your desk trying to get Johnny to put his things away where they belong and no dreaded bus duty. No, for nearly three months, teachers can forget all about those kinds of things. Well, that is unless they have kids of their own. Enjoy your time teachers. You deserve some time off.
