“The Love Letter”
"The Love Letter" (PG-13)This short and simple love story is a modest entry into the early summer movie sweepstakes. The story revolves around a love letter which falls into the hands of a number of characters, including Kate Capshaw and Tom Selleck. Confusion grows as each cast member thinks another wrote it.
DM: Offered up as a date movie for those not wanting to see "The Phantom Menace," "Love Letter" might draw some spill-over crowd but it sure won't have many who want to see it twice. Not that it's terrible, but once you've seen it you'll probably forget it fairly quickly.
The plot reminded me of one of those "Three's Company" plots in which every thing gets turned around and misunderstood.
Maybe the high point in the movie is the acting of Ellen DeGeneres, who shows flashes of what made her so funny in the earlier years of her TV show "Ellen."
While it is geared toward the older generations, the surprise ending might not sit well with some.
The pair of women sitting behind me sure found it mildly amusing, however.
