Sticky notes

Sticky notes

I’m a sticky note freak.

Yellow. Pink. Blue. I don’t care the color – just give me something small and noteworthy to sort my thoughts upon.

I think I love sticky notes so much because they are little and help me get out my thoughts really easily.

Now, if you came into my office at work you would see that there are sticky notes everywhere. I use them for work, sure, but I also use them to capture quotes or wise words from people in my life.

I love sticky notes.

The sticky notes on my desk have been accumulating and piling up and I have no idea what to do with them. Do I organize them in some way? Do I need to ask someone to make a scrapbook of my wise words and quotes? Should I type them into a Word document and save them digitally?

I don’t know.

Here’s the thing. I don’t want to get rid of the sticky notes. Let me tell you why.

The sticky notes tell a story.

It’s true.

Each sticky note is like a marker in my life. Each little saying or quote reminds me of a time where I needed encouragement along the way.

It’s funny how I can look back at each note and remember how that quote or idea moved or inspired me to keep moving. And each note reminds me of a person who spoke truth into my life.

“Change is not an option, but how we handle it is…”

“A life without cause is a life without effect.”

“We must learn to love each other fiercely and hold each other loosely.”

See, if you look at the sticky notes they would tell the story of a 20-something trying to find his place in this world. They would show you that there was a guy who has struggled with his significance. You’d learn about a safe, comfortable person who’s learned how to deal with big changes. The sticky notes would clue you into a guy who loves people really well, but has had to readjust his expectations and set up healthy boundaries. You would learn about a guy who wants to be a good leader and looks for direction from others.

The story is in the stickies.

So, for now, I’ll let the sticky notes pile up. No sequence or order is needed.

Instead, I’ll rifle through them when I’m down or discouraged and remember how far I’ve come.
