As you may remember from a previous post, I now have a full time job. I've been enjoying it although I'm way behind on Christmas and the daily duties that keep things in order here in "tinyland North."

Since this new adventure began, I'm finding myself answering curious questions from my co-workers who want to get to know the new kid on the block.

"So, Tina… tell me about yourself."

"Where did you live before?"

"How many children do you have?"

"What did you do before you came here?"

"How long have you been married?"

…And the inquiries keep coming.

I realize the bottom line, the question they really want answered is, "Who are you?"

Have you ever tried to define yourself? I mean, I can answer the obvious… We are originally from Ohio, but recently moved from Charleston, W.Va. I have 2 children and I'm a grandmother. I've worked as a decorative artist and designer. I've been married for 27 years. All true answers to those questions, but does that sum it all up or give them the scoop on what is going on with this chick they now see everyday?

Of course not.

Nor does my asking random and safe questions of them make me privy to who they really are.

Just like most situations in life, relationships are important. If you have a difficult time getting along with a coworker or someone you see everyday, it makes it uncomfortable to be there, but it's not just about comfort or getting along. Maybe it's about investing in relationships with others because, for some reason, I'm where I am for such a time as this. It's no accident that I'm here with these people at this time in my life.

I'm aware that under the generic or flat answers to some questions, there is much more going on in the lives of those around us. Maybe someone in their family is ill and struggling and that is weighing on their mind as they smile while answering. Maybe an experience I have had that has given me a bit of wisdom would encourage them and maybe, just maybe, they are here to do that for me.

I have a few things occupying my thoughts as life is what is going on beneath the surface of what one sees on a daily basis.

So, especially during this Christmas season, I'm hyper-aware of the coworkers at my new job - that they are people with lives, concerns, hurts, joys, and hopes that are there, but beyond what I see. They are more than the generic answer to the random question.

Blessings to you,
Tina
